Katsuki took a shaky breath, burying his head into his hands, pressing the heels of his palms into his eyes and trying to stop the tears from falling. He could hear his mother and father talking to the officer that had brought him back to his house. After he was rescued. The blond wanted nothing more than to go to his room and forget that any of this ever happened.

A soft mewl caught his attention; a light tan cat was pacing in front of him begging for attention. In that moment he forgot himself, forgot what happened, because his dumb cat was being her normal attention hog self. He let out a soft chuckle, picking her up, humming softly into her long fur. Apparently the noise caught the attention of the adults in the room all immediately looking at him worriedly causing him to roll his eyes more out of habit. He hated how everyone was treating him. Like a fragile doll. A sudden burst of anger caused him to jump to his feet and storm to his room, cat still nestled in his arms.

The boy curled into his bed, pressing his nose against his cat's neck, breathing in her familiar sent and letting his mind wander.

"Kacchan! What about this one?" the green haired boy asked, holding up a ginger kitten. Katsuki shook his head.

"No, not the right one."

"How do you know which one is the right one?"

"I'll just know!"

Katsuki led the way into the kitten room, leaving the cage out in the lobby. Izuku trailed behind him, giving a small gasp when he walked into the room. The blond turned to look at his best friend, seeing the boy smiling at a small grey kitten winding around his legs. "This one," he said firmly, looking up to meet Katsuki's eyes. The blond smirked before turning to look at the rest of the kittens. He had been planning what kind of cat he would get for a year now--it would have to be smart, listen to him, and look really cool.

He walked up to a black and white patched cat with blue eyes, reaching out a hand to it. The small thing started purring and rubbing against him. The blond immediately moved on--if he wanted a needy pet he would be getting a dog.

It took him almost an hour to find her. Just as they were leaving, Mitsuki saying they could come back next week and maybe the cat for him just wasn't here yet. He moved to close the door, a light blur shot past his feet, bolting towards freedom, slowing at the second set of doors. That's when he knew she was the one.

When he declared this his mother gave an exasperated sigh.

"Of course. Well then Katsuki, go get your new cat and I'll get the paperwork." She headed to the counter while the boys went to fetch the cat. The two boys chattered as they walked to the office. "Alright, now just choose names," Mitsuki said, turning to them.

"Toffee!" Izuku had declared, holding up the grey tabby kitten with light grey eyes that had yet to develop their true colour.

With a look from his mother, Katsuki shrugged. "I guess I'll go with Caramel."

Katsuki closed his eyes tightly, letting out a shaky sob. How did he mess things up so badly? Izuku used to always be there, even though he was behind Katsuki he was always there and now he might never be again. It had taken until now for him to realize just why he was so angry about Izuku being at UA. Surpassing him. He was leaving the blond behind and Katsuki missed him so much it hurt.

Caramel squirmed in his grip with a small whine of distress, and he immediately released her. Only for her to bolt out of the room, leaving him to cry alone in the darkness. He couldn't stop, the tears only fell faster and faster the blond buried his face in his pillows to muffle the sounds--the last thing he wanted was for his mother to come check on him and find him like this.

Trying to regulate his breathing, he grabbed his phone, turning it back on just to see a flood of messages in the group chat. Scrolling up to see what he missed, Katsuki found most of it was the squad reassuring Kirishima he would be okay and the pros would find Katsuki soon and if he tried anything someone would only get hurt. He almost put the phone away again when he found the next message was a stupid meme from Pikachu. After that the entire chat was full of its normal jokes and arguing. He couldn't help the small smile that tugged his lips at the sight.

Maybe he didn't have the bundle of sunshine following him around anymore, but maybe that was because Zuku had grown up, and it was time for Katsuki to do the same.

He looked down as his phone buzzed in his hand, Kirishima had tagged him in the chat before spamming the chat with grumpy cat memes. Katsuki smiled, leaning back to read the stupid jokes, when he felt a weight on his chest. Caramel had returned to curl up and sleep on his chest. The blond felt like he could breathe easy for the first time in years--he knew he has things he needed to work on, but just for tonight he would let his troubles fade away, as he laughed softly at the jokes his friends told and relaxed beneath the weight of his precious cat.
