The night, cold, long, and dark. The moons’ light, the only thing that ever lights the night. Besides the fires bursting from souls of dragons. The scorching and blazes that ignite from their chests. There were never sounds of a heartbeat, but there were sounds of crackling flames someone would expect only from a warm campfire. The dragon’s scales, most warm and smooth, unlike some. The ones that held no fire. Just ice, cold icicles hang from their ribs, their spines, all their bones as frost would exit their jaws. They had no warmth, they had only coldness. They were allies, like Yin and Yang, neither entirely warm or entirely cold.
The fire that shown the brightest was coming from the smallest of the NightWings. His name, Light, the runt of his family. The one NightWing that didn’t have a special name, no special powers.
Infact, he even had an odd name for a night dragon. Just by hearing his name, NightWings would laugh and say things like, “His parents must hate him, they gave him that ridiculous name!”;”Light? Are you sure that’s a NightWing? It sounds like he could be an IceWing.”
Light usually ignored those comments. His parents had explained they named him light because his eyes sparkled brighter than the three moons above. He had no reason to listen to those dragons that questioned his name. He has a good life, a good home, good food. He lived in the palace his life would obviously be good, but he always felt as if he were missing something. He had a feeling he would never find that missing something. He often ignored those thoughts, the thoughts of his missing puzzle piece. But sometimes he heard them, he heard them stalk in the back of his mind.
Light walked down the maze-like halls until he made it to the NightWing throne room where his Queen had called for him. The guard that walked Light to Queen Plaguebringer quickly disappeared back down the narrow hall.
Plaguebringer, a large female NightWing. Her scales, black as night, her underscales a dark blue. Her eyes, a dark blue, almost black. Three red rubies laid in her scales behind her eyes. A nose ring connected her nostrils. Smoke flared from both her nostrils and jaws. As the smoke rose, it curled around her muzzle and horns.
Her husband had no jewels, but he did wear armor on his tail and talons. King Armand, dark grey scales and a dark pale red for his underscales. His eyes, a fiery yellow. Captain of the NightWing army, very powerful in strength. He is also the NightWing Seer, which makes him even more special (apart from being king). He stood by the queen’s throne. Looking down on this small NightWing.
“I was summoned here, why? If you don’t mind me asking of course, your highness.” Light said, bowing his wings then closing them.
Queen Plaguebringer said nothing, just stared down at him.
“You’re Majesty?” Light asked softly.
“You’re a tracker, a hunter, yes?” Queen Plaguebringer asks, her voice, deep and threatening. Every time she spoke a hiss echoed deep in her throat. It frightened Light.
“Yes, but why was I called?” Light grew more tense. He hated the throne room. Every guard stood watching, unmoving. They looked like statues. Although King Armand wasn't a guard, he looked like one. He never moved. It was hard to tell if he was even breathing. Light never saw him blink.
“you were called to track someone for us.” Plaguebringer simply said, raising her head more.
“who is it, Your Highness?”
She jumped down from her throne and went straight to the NightWing runt. Plaguebringer, twice his size and moving as fast as a cheetah, Light’s fear grew and he lowered his head in submission, and took a step back.
“An assassin!” She snapped her jaws at the Night Dragon in front of her, hissing and growling loudly.
“We want them alive. You will find them for us, Light.”
“Yes ma’am,” Light said quietly.
“All you need to know is this: bright green scales. And a scorpion barbed tail. Look in the kingdom of sand. We want them alive!” Plaguebringer recoiled back to her throne. Her limp always bothered Light.
Her eldest daughter had attacked her for the throne years ago. Scars covered the queen's right shoulder. Where it was broken and healed. The healers had said she would have that limp for the rest of her days.
Light raised his head, then flew out the first open window he saw.
He will find this dragon.
He will prove his family that he is worth something.
He will become a respected dragon.
He will find this assassin.
