Chapter Nineteen:
I was the first to wake. The woods around us were dark and scary, even more so now that I knew exactly what could be hiding in them. It was cold in the truck. And as I watched, a figure emerged from the woods. Tall and lankey. Long stripped arms.
"Jack." I whispered in horror. He shook his head and mouthed one word.
"Run."
I sat bolt upright in the drivers seat. It had been a dream, but as I evened my breathing, I realized it may not have been. A horrible feeling of dread, of being watched weighed on my chest.
It wasn't a dream. It was a warning.
I started the truck, after rolling the engine once or twice, and tore out of the parking lot, jolting Isaac awake.
"What's going on?" He asked, rubbing his eyes.
"Jack is warning us to leave." I answered, shaking from the encounter. Fear radiated off of him as I drove, my stomach twisting and my fingers shaking on the steering wheel. I tear out onto the highway, earning a few beeps as I cut lanes, speeding along.
"K-Kerigan, were going to get pulled over!" Isaac yelled, though his voice sounded very distant. My heart beat was pounding so loud, it was all I could hear.
At least, until the siren jolted me out of a panic.
"FUCK fuck fuck!" I whisper. Jack's truck was big and heavy. There was no fucking way u could outrun the cops. I signalled to pull over, and sat there in my seat shaking, preparing myself to explain to the cops why I was speeding down the highway in a technically stolen truck with someone who doesn't exist in the eyes of the government with no driving license. They pulled over behind us, and I casted a few nervous glances at the dark woods.
"Oh shit oh shit oh shit oh shit" Isaac mumbled before I hissed at him to shut it. I watched the cop climb out of his car, holding a flashlight. I rolled down the window, panic streaking through my body.
"Excuse me, Miss, do you know why I pulled you over?" He asked as he strolled up to the window. I look up at him, shaking like a leaf. I open my mouth to explain myself when his eyes widen and he shines the flashlight straight into my face. "Wait--- are you that Whitley girl?"
"Yes!" I breathed in relief. "Yes, yes I am! God, I've been so scared since we escaped, and I thought I saw Toby in the woods and I couldnt- I couldn't slow down I just wanted to get away!" I broke down crying, and he spoke quickly into his walkie talkie.
"Who's truck is this?" He asked, glancing at Isaac. "Who is that?"
"Th-this is the truck I was taken there in... we walked for miles through the woods to find it... the keys were still in the door. It's a wonder they didn't rust in... this is Isaac. He was kidnapped by them when he was younger, but didn't know or even realize until they brought me back. He was kept locked up... I found him one day and we started planning our escape." I whisper, my whole body shaking.
"A-are you okay?" Isaac asked me, and I shook my head, teeth chattering. Tears sprung to my eyes as I glanced at the woods.
"N-No, please, sir, can we please leave, they're going to find me, they're going to catch up." I begged the cop, tears rolling down my cheeks as a panic attack rippled through my body.
"Yes! Yes, of course! C'mon, I'll give you a ride. Since I'm sure you don't have a license." I nod and get out, digging for my back pack. We follow the cop to his car, and climb in the back. He gets in and speaks into the walkie, flipping on the lights and sirens as he weaves in and out of traffic.
