Fae

I clung on tighter to his shirt.

Why did he have to leave me?
I didn't want him to leave me.
I'd be so lonely.

He pulls me closer to his chest while I sob into his shirt, leaving wet spots that continue to grow larger. He told he had to go! Why did he have to go? Maybe if I hold on tight enough he can't leave me.

He looked down at me with a sorrow filled expression, his red and black eyes shown in the moonlight. We were in an open field, and the cold gusts of wind had me shaking in his grasp.

"My sweet little angel, don't not shed another tear. I will always be close to you, just in the shadows, waiting for the day we can reunite. Do not fret little one, this will all be over in the blink of an eye. I need you to promise me something, do you think you can promise me something?"

I tried to swallow my sobs, while wiping my tears stained cheeks. I looked up and met his gaze, slowly nodding my head.

"Good, little one. Promise me you will never forget where you came from? Can you promise me that? Never forget me, or your true home, no matter where on this mundane place you live. You must promise me."

I chocked back my tears, trying to be the strong little girl he loves, and nodded.

"That's not good enough, I need to hear you say it out loud."

"I-I p-promise you-u"

He seemed satisfied with my answer, and slowly he began to set me down on the ground. I started to uncontrollably sob again, begging for him to stay, begging to go back home, I wanted to cuddle up with puppy and lay in my bed. I wanted to go home.

"Now, now what did I say? There's no crying, you must be strong for me amorem meum, everything will be ok. Now, when I leave, you count to 100 in your head, do you think you can count to 100? By the time you get to 100, there will be a lot of men wearing blue who will find you, I want you to go with them ok? Go with them, but do not tell them of anything about home. Your new name is Fae, ok?"

I nodded, and asked him the only question I could focus on.

"Will I stay 5? I don't want to be younger I'm a big girl." Determination filled me as I got ready to yell at me if he made me any younger. But, I heard him chuckle lightly to himself, before he kissed my forehead and tucked my hair behind my little ears, the cold stung them.

"Of course, my little flower, you can still be 5. Now, I must go. Start counting to 100 the second you cannot see me anymore, ok?"

"Okay." I began sobbing again as he stood up and started retreating into the tree line, almost disappearing within seconds.

I counted in my head.
1....2....3....4....5....

All the way to one hundred.
95....96....97....98....

But before I could say 100, I saw a man dressed in all blue, with a shiny gold thingy on his chest, burst into the open field and make eye contact with me. A look of relief washed over his features as he practically sprinted across the field and swooped me into his arms. He started to talk into some black box on his shoulder. What is that? We don't have that at home?

"Sergeant, I found the girl. I'm bringing her back to base now."

Then he looked at me with a look of pity crossing his stubble field face.

"I'm gonna take you somewhere safe, honey. Don't you worry, you're safe now no one will hurt you. Do you remember anything about tonight?"

I looked at the at the man in blue, before I remembered what he said to me. I swallowed the lump in my throat and looked up at the man, meeting his blue eyes.

"My name is Fae."
