A Place Where Lost Things Go
Written By: Cheyenne Swaims
It was a sunny day in Utica, New York. The sun was shining brilliantly, the bird's songs were more beautiful than ever, and- "AHHH! WHERE DID I PUT IT!?" an aspiring writer, just lost her 'Idea book'.
Clothes were flying, couches were shoved out the way, maybe a cat flew in the air? But this young women at the center of it all sat close to tears on the carpeted floor, raging her fingers on her phone to text her friend about this horrible conundrum. 'This paper is due on FRIDAY!! And all my ideas were in that journal!! And now it's gone!!' 'Dude, chill' 'But!" 'CHILL!'. The girl whined at the overly dramatic full capslock shout at her face. 'Fine, but what am I gonna now? That essay was supposed to be my future! It's a major grade!' she waited for a reply. Moments turned to minutes, minutes turned to hours, and still no reply to her desperate call.
She flopped to the floor, rolling around in her dirty laundry and un-vacuumed floor. Her phone buzzed and lit up, a new text. 'Just go to Forget-Me-Not' "Forget-me- what?" 'What's that?' 'A place where you find the things you lost, I went there last week when I lost my guitar pick. It's like magic' "Pfft- Magic" the writer snorted and stood up. 'Fine, I'll try this place out. Where is it?'
The sun shone through the clouds, a soft breeze passing through the wind chimes and creating a gentle hum of sound. The women frowned, looking down at her phone with the address then back at the small shop. It had a big window in the front and both wild and potted flowers growing all throughout the window and through the brick walls. She hummed and patted her bun, accidentally poking herself with the pencil that stuck through it. "Ow-" she winced, slowly walking forward to the store and quietly opening the glass door.
A bell rung and a cold breeze blew in her face. "Brrrr-" she looked around. A mystical, old vibe to the place "Wooooooah-" she stood star struck. "Now I especially need to find that journal!". There were nick-nacks and thingymajigs, whatchamacallit and whosawhatsis. And things you couldn't even imagine! In fact, even she couldn't even imagine. There was so much weird stuff. Strange flowers and scents, and colors, and- "Why hello dear!" "Ah!"
An old lady, tan and wrinkly and cute, like an elderly lady, usually was. And she had the biggest afro! The women locked eyes with it and slowly leaned forward to touch it, but the elderly lady had already moved. "How may I help you today young lady?" the small women gave her a toothless smile, her voice southern and sweet. The writer shook her head to get herself out of her trance and gave an embarrassed laugh "Haha- well you see I lost my notebook and I was told to come here to find it-" "A notebook! Why yes we have quite a few notebooks here!" and before she could explain what her book even looked like or why she needed it she was dragged away into a room
