P r o l o g u e

Echo watched as the chaos grew around her. For years her clan of omegas had remained hidden, taking in other omegas that were abused and neglected to save them and give them a place where they could be protected from alphas. For so long the omega clan had been peaceful but fate has a way of being cruel to those who deserve it least. A clan of alphas, known as Clan Prometheus, had found them. They were taking the young ones as slaves and torturing the elders. The once peaceful and serene garden was now full of blood and death. Her own clan members were being raped and murdered in the streets and she was unable to do anything to help them. Echo had never seen violence in her life. Being the only omega on the island that had been born out of love and raised with such kindheartedness, what she saw now was beyond disturbing. All her life, she had heard horror stories of alphas and how they treated omegas but she refused to believe it after her mother told her of her own father who treated omegas with respect and gentle affection, even dying while fighting to save one. These alphas and their scents were overwhelming and thick enough to choke her when she inhaled, she hadn't even realized she had been holding her breath as she watched the mortifying outrage before her eyes. Never had she thought her clan would be attacked in the middle of the night like this.

"Echo!" Her mother, named Sadie, called her name, finally reaching her and pulling her to her chest, "You need to get out, baby girl. Before they get you..."

"How?! And go where?!"

"Follow the river until you reach the coast. It's about twenty miles away from here, give or take. Someone is bound to help you in that territory." 

"What territory? Mama, I'm scared!" 

The mother reached around her neck and took off her pendant she always wore, clasping it around her daughter's neck, "Be brave, baby girl. Run and stay hidden, do not worry about coming back. There is nothing for you here now. I will stall them while you get out through the window. The water should keep your scent hidden and you have always been an expert swimmer."

"Mama..."

"I love you, baby." Sadie held her daughter one last time and kissed her forehead before gently shoving her into their home, shutting the door and locking it behind her. Echo's blue eyes gazed around the room in a moment of panic. Her hands grabbed her bag and she quickly grabbed her most treasured possessions. After, the window was opened and she stared down at the rushing water of the river below. A loud noise and her mother screaming was heard in the other room of her home. Quickly, she climbed out and shut the window behind her. A calm panic took over her. Shuffling to secure her bag over her shoulder, she jumped and landed with a splash. The water was freezing but she let it take her away from the only home she ever knew. Once she surfaced, she looked back. What she saw would be burned into her mind forever. The entire village was engulfed in bright orange flames and the screams were deafening. So much pain and sorrow rushed through her as her entire way of life was just... Gone. This couldn't be happening, none of this was real. There was no way this was taking place. It's just a nightmare, that's all. It was just a very bad nightmare she couldn't wake herself up from...

When she felt pain in her side, she knew she was wide awake. A shirtless alpha covered in scars had spotted her and threw his weapon into the water, impaling her through her left side. Though she was in pain, all she felt was rage when she jerked the blade out and swam to the shallows. She dove under the water and caught him off guard, surfacing behind him and stabbing him in the back. Applying pressure as best as she could to her wound, she let herself be taken out by the current and led down the river.

It seemed that alphas really were the terrifying monsters she had heard about in all the stories She had been told.
