Kenzy had a huge smile on her face as she ran from a small club house they had built for her near her best friends house; The Sawyers. It was his birthday today and she wanted to be the first to wish him. As she ran up the little steps to the door, she giggled knocking three times.
Her smile grew wide when she sees her best friends older brother Drayton.
"Hi Dray, is Jed awake?" She asked nicely. Her voice was of an angel so angelic and rang out like a harmony
He chuckled at her bubbly little self
" nah, not yet little Kenz", he said pulling her inside the house gently.
She laughed as she playfully punched his gut and running down to Jeds room. They had moved him from upstairs to the basement. She didn't know why, but she loved it.
She quietly made her way down the stairs to see Jed still asleep, she smirked and before you know it she gives out a battle cry and jumps onto him landing flat on his back.
Jed groaned, coughing turning his head to look at her
"Jesus Christ Kenz, what are you doing?" He said as he groggily rubbed his eyes.
Kenzy giggled," Happy Birthday Jed", she said softly as he looked at her, noticing his cheeks had reddened.
Jed quickly hugged her," thank you Kenzy", he whispered as he squeezed her tightly.
Kenzy got off the bed pulling him with her as they ran up the stairs. She squealed as soon as she made it to the top as Nubbins, Jeds second brother had tackled her to the ground. Jed laughed along with Kenzy who smacked Nubbins in the head a couple of times.
"What's goin' on over here?" Miss Sawyers voice rung out as she got near
"Hi momma Sawyer", Kenzy says as she hugged the lady who was like a mother to her.
"Hello there' little Kenz. I see you beat us at telling Jed happy birthday", she smiled at her
Kenzy giggled with a nod.
Verna Sawyer couldn't understand what kind of parent would leave a child in the middle of nowhere. Verna remembered seeing the little girl eating a dead rat, blood splattered all over her face. She felt upset and took the girl in but she was too afraid of an adults touch. So Drayton and Nubbins helped build her a clubhouse near the house.
She smiled as they got closer every single day, especially with Jed. They were two peas in a pod. Verna loved that her sons had someone they could trust and grow up with.
The girl brought joy and happiness, especially with her angelic ways. So innocent yet had a killer mind of her own.
"Come on kids, it's time to sing Happy Birthday to Jed", Verna shouted with a smile seeing Kenzy push Drayton over who landed on his back. They ran in and sat in their seats at the table.
Kenzy looked to see a man tied up," oh look, it's a bad man", she whispered with a giggle. Drayton and Nubbins laughed but she noticed Jed was quiet.
Kenzy placed her hand on Jeds knee with a smile," you okay?" She asked.
He smiled at her with a nod. That was all she needed to know he was okay.
Miss Sawyer came in with a beautiful white frosted cake and everyone began singing. Kenzy was happy to see Jed smile to everyone.
They clapped as soon as the song ended. Drayton stood up quickly cutting into the cake
"Drayton, where are your manners?" Miss Sawyer scolded with a sadistic smile
"Give the first piece to the thief", she said as Drayton smiled talking a handful of cake, walking towards the man taking out the cloth that stopped the man from speaking and removed it
" I didn't steal your fuckin' pigs", the man shouted at them
"You callin my son a liar? He seen your grubby hands steal our property", she said angrily.
"Why would I go anywhere near your dirty pigs? Or your filthy family? I swear the whole worlds gonna find out what kind of brood you raising here, Verna!", he yelled accusingly
Verna has enough,"shut him up. I've had enough. You listen to me, no hillbilly's gonna ruin my sons special day", she said then leaned down to Jeds face
"Are you ready for your present?" She asked walking towards a cabinet that Drayton stood next to with a smile.
Kenzy smiled next to Jed squeezing his hand.
"You know you're my special boy", Verna said as she pulled out a chainsaw. Kenzy shivered at the look of it.
"Wow!" She stated softly but could see Jed looking at it hesitantly.
His family began chanting his name. Kenzy knee what they wanted him to do, but she knew Jed wasn't one who like the idea of hurting someone else.
"Now remember, bad people like him, they're trying to break our family apart. They're tryna take Kenzy away from you. But we're not gonna let that happen, right? Now go on now, pick it up. Kenzy I want you to stand next to Nubbins alright" she says as Kenzy got up an walked around the table and stood beside Nubbins.
She playfully pushed his head and he chuckled.
As the whole family chanted his name and his mother egged him on when she gave him the chainsaw and Drayton turning it on for him. Kenzy knew deep down Jed couldn't do it, she would be happy to take his place but she knew miss Sawyer would give her a disapproving look.
Drayton forcefully pushed Jeds hand forward cutting the man but he stopped dropping it and running right into his mom
"Hey, You let us down Jed", she said but sighed with a soft look," it's okay, your family's always here for you. Remember that", she said kissing his forehead.
Kenzy looked to see his grandpa slammed the hammer on the guys head killing him.
"Why don't you and Kenzy go on and get cleaned up", Miss Sawyer suggested as they took the opportunity to get away from the blood.
Kenzy grabbed Jed and they ran down to his room
"Me first", she says with a laugh as she enjoyed his shower.
As soon as she was done, she sees Jed staring at his ceiling, no facial expression, just a blank look upon his face.
"If you stare long enough, I'm pretty sure your eyes will bleed", she giggled when he looked at her cross eyed with a small smile.
He moved over for her and she laid down beside him on his pillow," it'll get easier Jed, it will", she softly says to him.
He sighs," I hope so, I don't want to let my family down," he said looking at her
"Believe me Mr. Jedidiah Sawyer, I know so", she giggled kissing his cheek," I promise," she whispered as he stared her in the eyes.
He kissed her forehead as she closed her eyes, snuggling into his warmth.
They fell asleep knowing what the days go by will bring for them!
