It was always dark. A world full of no color. No music. No creativity. How could anyone truly live?
The answer was simple.
They didn't.
All but two at least.
She was a girl, and him a boy, both given no name by anyone but each other. They both lived alone, no one to call family but each other. They had both been thrown out by their "real" families because they were different. So different that they classified as an act of rebellion by the "perfect" system.
But they still had each other.
And a power that no one could know about. He could create color and her music.
"Mark," she called to him. Mark had turned around to see the beautiful girl running to him. As soon as he saw her, he turned back around to continue working on the shelter that was starting to deteriorate. "What is it Sophie," Mark asked with a slight eye roll. She had stopped him leaned against the last sturdy support on the tent, doubled over as if someone had punched her in the gut. "I... I.... I," she painted out.
Mark gave out a long sigh, and slowly turned his attention to her, "You, you, you," he said in a sarcastic tone, "Spit it out already, and wash the mud off of yourself," he said eyeing her up and down, "It's already cold out here, we don't need you to catch cold."
Sophia self-consciously combed through the mud in her hair, "It's your fault I have to rub mud on myself," she said softly.
Mark rolled his eyes, "We can change that if you'd like. In fact, it might be safer If you didn't have color on you." Sophia looked at her mud-covered hair and skin before shaking her head softly, letting go of the strand in her hand, "No, I love my hair color."
Mark could hear the shame in her voice and slowly took off his jacket. "Just promise me you won't get caught," he said in a kind tone, "I can't stand the thought of living without you."
She looked up to see him gently set his coat over her shoulders.
"Now hurry," he said, turning back to work on their tent, I heard there's going to be a meteor shower, and I don't want to watch it by myself..."
A smile grew on her face as she ran inside the tent. Mark gave a sigh and sat on the ground, letting himself fall into thought, 'Tell her how you feel tonight,' he repeated to himself over and over again, 'you're seventeen, young, adventurous,' he continued to think.
"Tell her," he then said out loud.
"Tell me what," Sophia asked, curiosity filling her voice.
Mark felt a blush creep to his cheeks as he cleared his throat and stared off into space, "That you look like a hot mess." Sophie then immediately kicked him in the thigh, "Shut up!"
He laughed slightly before turning to her, "Only telling the truth."
She laughed at him and kicked him again, "And that Mark, is why you will never have a girlfriend!" Mark smiled and stood up, "Says you."
"And I'm..."
"You're always right.."
"Good, you haven't forgotten," she said with a giggle, "Now, let us go!"
She grabbed him by the hand, most of the dirt that had been caked on her pale skin was wiped away, her red hair pulled in a ponytail. Most of the dirt in her hair was gone except at the roots because she was in a hurry.
Mark continued to smile at her, "Yes your majesty."
"Now, Mark, we both know that if I was queen, we wouldn't be living in a junkyard." Mark began to walk slower as he could feel her grip tightening on his hand. He knew what was coming, "Sophie, don't start thi-" was all he could get out before she whipped around.
"Why? Why does no one love us?" Sophia let go of his hand, instead, wrapping them both around herself, trying to block out the bone-chilling wind, "we did nothing wrong. I just can't understand. Do I even want to..? If... If I had the choice... If they cared about us... wouldn't they risk everything for us?"
"You know I can't answer-"
"If it were me... If the system promised you a nice cozy life, all the food, all the women you could ask for, would you give me up? Would you give me up like our parents? Tell me the truth?" He watched as tears fell down her face, feeling his heartbreak, "Sophie." Mark began to walk towards her as she took a step back.
"Tell me..."
"Why would you think I would? You're the only person I trust. I wouldn't mind being on the run with you for my entire life," this time when he took a step closer to her she didn't back away, instead, she too came closer.
"Really?"
"Really, I promise."
Mark pulled her in for a hug, but instead, she pulled his face to hers, placing a kiss upon his lips. Shocked and confused, he stood there. When she pulled away, flustered and blushing he said, "And I thought if I said that I had feelings for you I would get friend zoned..."
Sophie giggled, blushing herself, "Never. Thank you for that... "
"I love you."
"I love you too..."
And as she said that, she began to sing to him.
