I guess everyone has high expectations for their senior year, but everyone’s expectations are different. For the popular kids, it’s their last hurrah, the last time they get to be at the top of the social food chain before going off to college and face the cruel truth that no matter who you were in high school, you are now just another co-ed who, yes, inevitably will gain the freshman fifteen. For the loners, this is the last time they are going to have to be out casted for their ‘quirky’ fashion sense or ‘weird’ taste in music, before finally being understood by the real world. The nerds see their senior year as the last obstacle between them and the intellectually challenging life that all the pamphlets promise you college will be.

As for my expectations for my senior year, they were simple; I just wanted it to be perfect. I wanted to get into to my dream college, I wanted to hang out with my friends before we were living on different parts of the country and I wanted my crush to fall madly in love with me. Is that really so much for a girl to ask?. I don’t think so.

But from the way this current conversation was going, I think my senior year was beginning to fall apart and it hadn’t even begun yet.

“What do you mean you are moving away?” Coral said waving her hand above her head “I don’t get it”

“I got in to Westminster Academy in England” Reese said smiling slightly as she propped herself on a big pink puff.

“Why didn’t you tell us you were applying to England?” I asked trying to sound as light and unaccusatory as possible. Reese and I were really close and it really hurt to know that she didn’t confide in me about something so important.

“Because it was long shot” Reese answered shrugging her shoulders “I sent it out on a whim the last day of the application call. I don’t even know how I got in, I mean it’s like super Ivy League by prep school standards and it’s real cut throat to get in, let alone get a full scholarship”

“Oh, come on” Joshua said as he jumped from Reese’s desk and threw himself on top of her “We all know you are a genius Reese’s Pieces! And I am very happy for you” he said hugging her tightly and then looking menacingly toward me and Coral “We all are”

“Yeah! It’s going to be great” I said trying to sound as enthusiastic as possible.

“Just promise me one thing” he said raising his right index finger “You have to come back talking all British to me” he smirked at her and continued in his best British accent “You know, saying stuff like ‘ello, govna and cherrio and cheeky”

Reese burst in laughter smacking him on the chest when he added in a very serious tone “I am dead serious Resse Anne Goldsetin, accents are freaking sexy”

“I’ll do my best” she said winking at him.

“Alright” he said nodding and then wrapping his arm around her shoulders “But, seriously though, we are really happy for you”

“Well, I am not!” Coral said crossing her arms across her chest and pouting “This year was going to be awesome and you’ve ruined it” she added as she got up in fury and stomped out of the room.

“What got into her?” Joshua said frowning and pointing at the door “Forget about it, she’ll get over it” he said waving her off.

“I better go see if she’s OK” I offered.

Coral is very sensitive and very dramatic so it’s best if I go check up on her before she runs into Mr and Mrs. Goldstein and tries to convince them to make Reese stay. Plus, I kind of agree with her.

“No, I’ll go” Reese said breaking from Joshua’s embrace “I’m the one she’s mad at” she said standing up and going after Coral, yelling over her shoulder “don’t do anything I wouldn’t do”
