Chapter 4
Tiptree
Static... shifts of something... Death? No. Slaughter. Then, smoke. But out of it comes a figure. What? What is it?
"What is it?" a hand taps Sarah's shoulder. She looks to her side and sees...a corpse. No, a person, talking. What was it saying?
"Sarah. What is it?" That voice sounded familiar. Someone she knew, but just barely. The words were originated from the corpses mouth.
"Sarah!" it called once more. Then a deafening scream clawed at her ears, making her body stiffen. Sarah covered her ears, trying to stop the noise. Then she blacked out, but only for a slight moment.
When she awakened from the ordeal she saw Jeremy, a local farmer that was a member of her make-shift squad.
He stared at her and asked, "You okay?"
Sarah rubbed the sweat from her forehead and replied, "What happened?" Jeremy gave a thumbs up to a feminine figure standing on a nearby roof.
He turned back to Sarah and explained, "You collapsed and started to mumble some sort of gibberish. I stayed with you, while the others moved on ahead of us."
"Others?" she asked.
Jeremy looked around the area and replied, "Will and Jirrahe scouted ahead while me and Siris stayed with you..."
A voice called out from ahead of them, "...and your welcome too."
Sarah turned her head towards the voice and saw a young athletic woman.
"Thanks." Sarah called towards her new companion, Siris.
"Don't mention it." she replied.
She rolled her shoulders and stated, "We better catch up with the rest of the squad."
Sarah picked up her rifle and locked it to her back. She put her hand on her earpiece and stated calmly, "You two there?"
A voice called back, "We're in position, waiting for further orders."
Sarah quickly asked, "What are we up against?"
A different voice called back, "More than we can handle with a small team." Jeremy took point ahead and left Siris and Sarah.
Siris asked cautiously, "What do we do now?"
Sarah pondered for a moment and a thought came to her head. "Do you have a shot on the target?"
A few seconds passed by, then a voice called, "No, but we're within three blocks of a lock-on with explosives."
Sarah turned her attention ahead of her and replied, "Good. Wait for my signal to make a run for it." Siris flashed a sign of confusion.
Sarah turned towards her and stated, "We're going to cause a diversion." Siris's confused look didn't leave.
She quickly questioned, "How are we supposed to do that?"
Sarah grabbed her rifle from her back and asked playfully, "How else?" Siris smiled and nodded her head. Sarah called Jeremy over and explained the situation. He didn't seem too happy about the change in plans.
"We need a good defensible position if we want to last." he said.
Siris then added, "An escape route would be nice too." Sarah scanned the road ahead of her, looking for a stable building.
She spotted a tower and quickly pointed, "There."
Jeremy and Siris turned their attention to the building she was pointing at. "That's a church." Jeremy stated, "It's been there for as long as this colony existed."
