Blood is thicker than water. Family is more important than friends. At least that's what I've been taught all my life.
Today is my 19th birthday. Papa promised me he would come home for my birthday. But like every year since I can remember, I'm sitting on the couch by the fireplace and looking at the door hoping he would rush in five minutes before my birthday ended. I know I will be getting a huge present from him just like every year, but that's not what I want anymore. I know he won't come, at least now I know why.
3:24 PM - November 21, 1972 (2 Years Ago)
It has been a few days since I turned 17 and I am still angry at Papa for not coming home on my birthday. Mama said to not worry about and that he has his reasons. I am upset but I don't want Papa to know when he comes home. I am 17 for goodness sake, I do not want cry in front of my family.
A few hours later...
There is a knock on the door. I runs to open the door to greet her Papa. Instead I see my cousin and best friend, Mashka. Mashka comes in and we chat and gossip about the latest news at school. A few minutes later, Papa sneaks in on us and gives me a gift bag and and a birthday kiss. I open the bag and there are stacks of cash in there. I sit up with surprised face. Papa tells me that it is because I am growing up and need money on my own. I do not know how to react mostly because I have never seen that much money before. Papa tells Mashka that her mom wants her at home. When Mashka leaves, he tell me to come in to the library because we need to talk.
We go into the library and Papa says, "I need to tell you something, but you have to promise to not tell anyone.
"I promise, Papa."
"I don't even know where to start. First of all I need to give you an explanation why I am home so rarely."
"Papa, I know you travel around the country for work, its alright"
"Honey, that is not all I do."
"What else, Papa?"
"I am second in charge for organized crime or "mafia" in our country."
I start laughing...
"Papa, you always make me laugh"
"Honey, I am serious, I need you to know this so that you will be safe."
"Does Mama know?"
"No, she does not. I do not have the heart to tell her. I have been trying for years, but I just can't. I need you to protect your Mama and yourself when needed."
"Papa, don't say that..."
"Honey, Please!

Three more minutes and I'll go to sleep. I am so tired of this. I know he is the second in command crime boss and everything, but I am his daughter. If blood is thicker than water, why isn't my dad here. I should be priority, at least on my birthday.
There is knock on the door. I jump to open it and when I do, I am in for a surprise.
There stood my friend, Albert, who hasn't talked to me in three years.
I don't blame him for not wanting to talk to me, not after what my father did to their family.
