"Ghenesis… she did IVF. With Zeus’s sperm," Erin said. “And now she havin’ a full-on panic attack. We don’t know what to do!”
....Excuse me?
"I’m sorry—SHE DID WHAT?!"
Chuchi barked as I stood there frozen.
What the actual hell!?
Soon as I hung up, I threw on my hoodie, slipped into my pink Crocs with the little rhinestones on 'em, and flew out the house like the place was on fire. Granny shouted somethin’ behind me about dinner, but I couldn’t even process it. My heart was beatin’ loud in my ears.
IVF?
With Zeus’s sperm?
Nah. Nahhh. This couldn’t be real.

By the time I pulled up to the clinic, I was outta breath, sweaty, and already irritated. The second I stepped through the sliding glass doors, Tay flagged me down.
“Gigi! Over here!”
"Where she at?” I asked, lookin’ around.
“In the back. She locked herself in one of the exam rooms,” Erin said, lookin’ pale like she seen a ghost.
"And the damn doctor talkin’ bout we need security if she don’t calm down," Tay added.
I stormed past the front desk, not even giving the receptionist time to blink.
"Gigi—wait! You can't go back there without clearance!" she shouted.
"Try me." I snapped, pushing through the door marked Employees Only. I moved through the hallway like I built the damn place. Finally, I heard it—soft sobs behind a closed door.
“Ghenesis,” I called out, knockin’ twice.
No response. Just sniffles.
I cracked the door open.
There she was. Curled up in the corner on the exam table, still in that thin hospital gown, knees to her chest, hair all over the place, eyes swollen from crying. She looked like a little girl again.
My chest broke.
“Ghen,” I whispered, walking in slow. “Baby… it’s just me.”
She didn’t move, just let out this ragged breath that sounded like it hurt her soul to let go. That’s when I saw her hands—shakin’. Still clingin’ to her phone like it was life support.
"I didn’t mean to do it," she whispered, barely audible.
I moved closer, climbed up beside her on the table, and wrapped my arms around her like she was glass and the whole world had dropped her.
"You hear me?" I said softly, brushin’ her hair back. “You okay. I got you now.”
"I-I was just tryna stop Kendra," she stammered. "I didn’t think—I just wanted to make sure she couldn’t trap him. I thought… I thought maybe if I did it, I’d stop her. And then the doctor… and then they took the cup… and I froze…"
She was ramblin’, stuck in her own head. I pulled her tighter.
“Breathe. Baby, breathe. You not alone no more.”
She clutched my hoodie like she was drowning. Her whole body trembled.
“I don't think I can do this Gigi. I don’t even know what I’m doing. What if it works? What if I messed everything up?” Her voice cracked on every syllable.
“Ghen. Look at me.”
She didn’t.
“Ghenesis, look at me.”
Her eyes finally met mine. Bloodshot. Glassy. Afraid.
“You ain’t mess nothin’ up,” I said, firm. “You acted outta panic. Outta love, even. You tried to protect Zeus the only way you knew how. But listen to me—whatever come from this, we gon’ deal with it together. Me, Tay, Erin, Granny if we need her. You not gonna drown, you hear me?”
She nodded, barely.
“You still you. Smart, fierce, sensitive-ass Ghenesis with a mouth like a sailor and a heart like a nurse.”
That finally got a weak smile.
"And Zeus?" she asked.
"Zeus gon’ flip his damn lid. But that ain’t your problem right now. Right now, you gon’ sit here, breathe, and let me be your rock."
She rested her head on my shoulder. "You always save me."
"I know, baby. That’s what best friends do. I’m your rib. I go where you go."
We sat there in silence for a while. Her breath finally slowed. The storm passed, even if only a little. I reached over, pulled one of the scratchy clinic blankets off the counter, and wrapped it around her.
Then I whispered, "Also… girl, you really went through with IVF like this was a damn Lifetime movie. That’s some wild sh—"
She smacked my chest, laughing through tears. “Gigi shut up.”
“Love you too,” I grinned, holding her tighter. “You want me to call Zeus or you wanna wait ‘til we got security present?”
She groaned. “Let me live five more minutes before you bring him up.”
