Jen and David Baker were more excited than anything to meet their daughter. The doctors had been acting strangely after the baby was born, but they pushed it aside. Everything was perfect, they thought. Everything will be fine.
It wasn't until the small child was handed to them that they realized something was wrong. The doctors hesitated, as if something was wrong with the child. Mrs. Baker felt panic well up inside of her. They eventually handed her the baby, and her worries went away.
Until she moved the strap of fabric on her wrist that should've been covering her baby's counter.
Mrs. Baker let out a wail when she realized that the child had no counter. Mr. Baker tried to console her, but it was pointless. They wouldn't be able to have anymore children, and the one child they did have wouldn't ever find love.
Diane Elder was pacing, waiting for them to bring out her baby. Her locket holding the timer that once was on her wrist was swinging. This baby was the last thing her husband could ever give her. She couldn't bear it if anything bad happened.
When they finally did, she was overwhelmed with joy. She held the baby, on the verge of tears, and slowly rocked the baby. She started to reach for the red strip of fabric around the baby's wrist.
I can't wait to find out how long it is before she meets her husband. I can't wait for...
Her thoughts were stopped when she saw the rainbow screen of her daughters timer. Her daughter was a lesbian. And Diane could've been more broken.
Jonathan and Mara Clearly were awaiting their baby boy eagerly. He had been born a few hours ago, and they were bursting with joy. When he was finally handed to them, they kissed the top of his head and hugged him gently. They slowly pulled down the red piece of fabric covering his timer, revealing a rainbow timer with a time of twelve years was revealed, and it was counting down each second closer to his true love. John and Mara smiled at each other, and cradled the baby all the way home.
Lea was eight when it happened. She heard a wail across the park, and the bright blue timer on her wrist just stopped.
"Mommy? It's stopped! What's happening? What about my true love?"
Mrs. Brightly grabbed her daughter and raced across the park to where the woman had wailed. A small, pale boy was bleeding in the grass.
"Please, Nathan. Don't die. Please."
The boys timer turned bright red, and Leas followed within seconds.
The woman looked up at the timer on Lea's wrist with tears in her eyes.
"I'm sorry." Lea whispered. She didn't understand. She didn't understand that the timer wasn't going to restart. That the boy, laying here, dead in the grass, was her soulmate. And she didn't understand for a long, long time why Mrs. Pearling was a family friend after that day. She didn't understand that that woman would have been her mother-in-law for years.
