— Anne —
My eyes open to the flavorous sensations wafting towards my being. It begins with the crisp scent of clipped grass and is followed by the sun projecting warm, blood orange hues onto my pale freckled eyelids. My growing blossom tree pokes her elegant arm through my window as if she is bidding me good morning. I proceed to tiptoe across the wooden floor to return her greetings.
'Fantastical morning to you too, Lady Penelope, my dear tree. How divinely taupe your branches are today! I've never seen brown enhance one's beauty like it does to you'. An image of Gilbert wearing his hazelnut vest, which exaggerates his perfect, broad figure passes through my mind, causing me to let out a single hiccup in surprise. I do admit that he does remind me of a tall, profound oak, standing wise and gentle. I am so pleased that my avoidance and dislike to him has come to an end. His momentary leave from Avonlea allowed me to realise the friendly admiration I felt for the boy. But in a way, the camaraderie between us is somewhat different than what I feel for Cole, as if there are questions left unasked and answers yet to be declared. This thought leaves an anchor in my stomach.
I push my cyclone of unfocused thoughts aside and begin to remove my garments. I slip on my pale green dress, decorated with small pearls and moonlight lace, which was gifted to me by Miss Jeannie. Marilla used the beads and trimmimgs to embroider the dress.
I run over to my tree to pluck a blossom for my hair. I decide it is best when untied. I catch a glimpse of Matthew and Jerry preparing Belle to leave with their farm tools through my bedroom window. I sprint across the hall and down the stairs only to stop abruptly when Marilla enters my vision.
'Marilla! Just the parent I was after. Good morning. May I ask where Jerry and Matthew are off to this morning?' I ramble.
'Good Morning to you too, Anne, and to answer your urgent concern, the men are off to help tend to Gilbert and Sebastian's fallow fields. You may go along if you wish. But eat some breakfast first and tie up your hair!' Marilla replies responsibly. She is plain but elegant in her manner.
'Thank you Marilla!' I burst, giving her a peck on the cheek. I have already forgotten her commentary about my hair and breakfast as I skip to the door and alert Jerry and Matthew of the change in plans and seat myself between the two. The thought of seeing Gilbert again gives me such a rush. I decide not to analyse this feeling further.
When we arrive at the Blythe residence, I see Sebastian and Gilbert waving towards us with wide, welcoming smiles. I catch Gilbert's eye and his smile weakens when he sees me. He begins to straighten his collar, fix his cuffs and tug on his overshirt. He attempts to straighten his dark curls and raise his chin in a sombre manner. His smile is gone. Have I done something wrong?
