Blue. That was the color Vikina couldn't see. The color of the sky, the color of the ocean, the color of the sneakers her little sister wore to school every day. It was the color of her soulmate's eyes.
Vikina was in high school, the place where people started to find their soulmates and got serious about dating. She hadn't found her soulmate yet. Her best friend, Eesah, told her what it felt like. You meet eyes by chance, and both sets of eyes widen as the color you've been missing just appears in thousands of different shades and little details and the world is suddenly so much clearer. Eesah had found her soulmate in her sophomore year, and now that they were juniors she was in a happy relationship. She always told Vikina how amazing it was.
Funny thing was, Vikina didn't care. Walking with Eesah on the way to school, she couldn't help but feel a disconnect as her friend, once again, talked about her soulmate. Vikina's black hair covered one side of her face, her dark blue hood pulled over her head. Eesah's hazel eyed smile and bright peppy look as her blond ponytail bounced made people wonder how the two of them became friends.
"Eesah!" Nick called out upon their arrival, blonde hair reflecting the sun, his green eyes looking lovingly at her.
"Good morning Nick," Eesah said, smiling happily.
"First class, English!" He said, clapping his hands together. "Off to English we go!"
"See you around Viki," Eesah said, using Vikina's nickname.
Vikina sighed, "See you around Eesah." Vikina's eyes were green. She felt sorry for her soulmate, since green was the color of the most beautiful things. Trees, grass, limes, she could go on.
From across the field she saw her other two friends, the two who also hadn't found their soulmates yet. Vikina was sure that when they found their soulmates they'd leave her to be a insignificant third wheel, like with Eesah. "Hey Ebony, how's it going Lynn?" They both smiled at her, and they started to talk about the weather and other non consequential things.
"So what do you think about Jonah?" Lynn gushed, ever the one for gossip.
Ebony laughed, his black tossed hair blowing in the wind. "He's got a soulmate Lynn."
"Who says you have to stick with your soulmate?" Lynn said, "I for one think it's stupid that the universe gets to tell you who to be with."
"Lynn, you're the one who looks into everyone's eyes when you go somewhere because you want a soulmate," Ebony laughed and Lynn flushed. Ebony was born with one blue eye and one green eye. His soulmate might as well just be colorblind. Lynn's eyes were gray, and she always worried that her soulmate wouldn't know if they had seen her. Ebony, Lynn, and Vikina had known each other since they were kids, and still had never told each other which color they couldn't see.
"Lynn, I think soulmates are dumb," Vikina said.
Lynn shrugged, "That's a very Viki thing to say," she laughed. "Never even had a crush."
Vikina was starting to consider the fact she was asexual. But that wouldn't make sense, because she still couldn't see a color. But did the universe and the world really get to tell her what to be?
"I think Jonah is cute," Lynn said, returning to fawning over the most popular boy in school, challenged only by Matt Snyde.
"Guys we should probably get to class," Vikina said, changing the topic again.
"Sounds good," Ebony said, walking off to Chemistry.
Lynn hesitated a moment. "What?" Vikina said, "You have class with him, go on."
Lynn walked over slowly and pulled her hair away from her face. Or tried to, before being batted away by a stubborn Vikina. "It's nothing Lynn. I just put my hair like this today."
Lynn sighed softly, "It happened again didn't it."
"Lynn, I'm fine. Go to class." Vikina walked off in the direction of Alegbra, hearing Lynn sigh behind her. She'd be fine. She always was.
"Look, it's the not emo emo kid," someone from the back of the room said as she entered. Vikina ignored the snickers and taunts and sat in the front of the room in her assigned seat, right next to Matt Snyde. He always wore sunglasses, but none of the teachers thought he could do anything wrong. He was the second most popular kid in school, straight As, an angel given to this school from heaven.
He was also a massive jerk.
He opened his mouth to speak, a mean look on his face. But at that moment, Mr. Tomson walked into the room and he changed what he was going to say.
"Hey Viki! How was your weekend?" He smiled dazzlingly at her. A few girls who sat in the back buzzed jealously.
"You can have him," Vikina said, ignoring Matt completely and addressing the girls. They laughed and called her silly while Matt fumed at being ignored. But when Vikina looked back at him he quickly composed himself. Vikina knew he acted around her, to save his reputation with the girls and the teachers.
"Welcome back from the marvelous time we call the weekend!" Mr. Tomson said, smiling. "We were supposed to have a quiz today, according to the plans my department made, but let's be honest, quizzes don't belong on Mondays! So instead we'll play a review game and have the quiz Wednesday. If everyone gets an A we can watch videos for the rest of class.
Viki sighed, putting her head on her desk. Mr. Tomson was a good teacher, but she hated acting like everything was ok. Seemed like it was going to be just another ok day.
