"But I just love to tease you, you are so cute when your all worked up." with that remark he let go of her twisted arm and stalked down the alley ahead with such feline prowess and grace that it was almost alarming to think what he might be capable of doing.
Kara had followed Damian through the city in complete silence not even daring to make eye contact, eventually they stopped at the outer edge of the city. He lead her to a small office building. It was all a disguise. This, this was the rebellion. Not a bunch of brutes and misfits, just everyday people who had seen through the lies and ploys that the government had set. They were the ones who had noticed the missing people when everyone else was told to forget, the ones who would not comply to the strict regime of working and praising a false god.
These were her people, Kara was their hope and salvation because she was the only one close enough to the high priestess to pull off our plan. She was going to kill her.
"Ok everyone listen up, today is the day and it has to go perfectly. So i want everyone working their asses of right now.Who has the thumb drive?" A boy came up and handed a small usb to damian and then quickly descended back into the front row of the crowd.
"Did you want to go over it one last time?" his cold determination softed as he searched kara's face for any sign of unsurety.she nodded keanly as he dismissed the crowd back to their work and sat kara down to make sure she knew exactly what to do tonight.
They sat across from each other as blueprints were brought up on a small screen in between them, the pictures visible from both sides.
"here , this is the computer system for the whole city, when you put the thumb drive into the mainframe, it will give you a manual override code
From there it's up to you to send out the broadcast then disable the shields around the wall.
Kara took in a deep breath, the calm before the storm was now, and she was going to be the first strike of lightning. "Let's do this thing."
Damian stood up and extended a hand to her, she let him help her to her feet noting the toned muscles in his arms and the calloused fingers wrapped around hers, she had never noticed how strong he was.
"If we don't end this game, it will end us. This is a necessary act we all know that."
Everyone nodded in approval as kara took the thumb drive, with a nervous breath she took off out the middle of the city, home.
~~~
Every turn of a corner felt like the last move she would make, every pair of watching eyes felt like they would leap at her, but she made it back home without incident.
She composed herself before walking back into the building, painting a tired and disdained manor across her face.
"Hey joe, i'm going back upstairs. Would you please let me sit on the terrace alone for awhile." she looked at him with a sad expression
He simply smiled and nodded his eyes laced with pity and sorrow as he lead her to the elevator.
"You know not to wander anywhere else, but take as long as you need. I'll wait by the elevator down here."
Without another glance kara closed the door and made her way up to the restricted zone, where the computer main frame was.
She hurried through the maze of hallways and doged the worker milling about, by the time she made it to the room she was sweating and her breathing was labored. A janitor walked in, right on time as the plan said. She crept in behind him, the room was really big. Kara had trained for this and she knew exactly where she had to go, but now she was faced with the real deal, it seemed impossible.
Her head was spinning and her mouth was dry. Kara thought she was going to pass out but she remembered what Damian had told her.
"end it before it ends you."
with that she struck out at the janitor who was still lazily mopping nearby, swiftly knocking him unconscious, she easily found the computer she was supposed to plug the thumb drive into thanks to the blueprints, and then began uninstalling the electric fields around the walls of the city.
It was done she had just played their prerecorded video on every screen in the city, she could leave, go find damian and they could run. But the door slid open and the silhouette of a woman was standing in the doorway. The woman took a step forward, her face illuminated by the same dull light of the computer room and thus revealing her beautiful features to kara.
It was her mother.
"How dare you."
Her mother's voice was still soft and honeysweet, but behind her eyes molten rage glowed.
"You dare defy the gods, you will be judged for this. I will send you to them now!"
As the last word slipped past her lips she moved. Cat like reflexes aided her as she crossed the distance between them in seconds, but kara was fast too. She managed to dodge the small blade her mother had concealed behind the ruffles of her robe and was now slashing towards kara's face.
"Stop! please!"
Kara's plea fell upon deaf ears as he mother stuck at her once again. Kara grabbed at the blade but she fumbled and both of them lost their grip on the sharp object. In a frantic movement she lost sight of the blade.
Both of them stepped back, kara meet her mothers eyes. The rage subsided and was replaced by something else, fear.
Karas eyes travelled down to her mothers stomach where the knife was now embedded. Her legs faulted and kara lept to catch her.
"I-I'm sorry."
Tears burned karas eye as she cradled her dying mother.
"Please forgive me, it wasn't supposed to happen like this."
Her mother drifted her pain stricken gaze back to kara. Her words were sharp and cold.
"Never."
The light left her eyes as a clap of thunder rolled through the sky, shaking the ground. Now it was truly over.
