It was Monday, the day I was dreading the most for several reasons. I was a junior in high school, and it was the first day of school. My phone buzzed signaling that it was time to get up. I tried to hit snooze but a hand hit mine away, my mom. I had just realized that she was standing over me waiting for me to get up. I groaned wanting to stay in bed for the rest of my life, but I knew when it came to my mom that if I didn't get up, that it would result in being splashed in the face with ice water. With that, I got up,gave her a hug, and went to the bathroom to get ready.
Once I had gotten ready, I rushed out of the house and jumped into my car. I sped down the road, hoping to get to school before the bell rings. Right as I walked into the school, the bell had just rung, so I was walking pretty fast in the hallway. As I was walking down the hall, a leg had stopped me and tripped me. I fell flat on my face, it is not like this hadn't happened before , but this time was different.
While, getting up from the ground, a voice spoke up, a voice that I had never heard.
" Hey, are you okay?" the voice spoke. I could tell that it was a boy. No one had ever stood up for me, let alone a boy.
" Uh..... yeah I am fine, thanks." I looked up, and his hair was brown with little spots of blond, and eyes that were as blue as the ocean.
" Here let me help you," he states helping me pick up my bag and book that fell on the floor. He takes a moment to survey me I am guessing to make sure that I am okay, " what is your name?"
" It is Blythe," I told him confused why anyone would even want to know me, based on my background of being the most ugly person in school.
Over the summer I had been working on my appearance, but I knew that whatever I did would never change what happens at school every day. My only friend was Adeline, the girl I have known since we were 10. She was popular, but always had time to be my best friend in the whole world. I don't know what I would do without her.
" Well nice to meet you Blythe, I am Dameon," he told me, then he yells down the hallway to the people who tripped me, " Hey you guys, Blythe here has done nothing wrong, and you seriously should not have done that."
" Who cares, Blythe should not even be here she should be in kindergarten with all of the people her size," one of the girls yelled out. I wouldn't say that I am kindergarten short, but I am pretty short, shorter than pretty much everyone in the high school.
"Who cares about size, we are all humans and deserve to be treated the same way," he spoke with grace. I really owe him for what he is doing for me. The girl then give us a big 'whatever'and walks away. He then asks what class I have and we find out that we indeed have most of the same classes together. He must be new because I have never seen him before and if he knew what people think of me, he would not have just stood up for me. While walking in the hallway, we tell each other a little more about ourselves, and I learn tons of unique things about him.
" So you are new right?" I ask.
" Yep, I moved from California so pretty far away," he answers, but I can't help wondering why someone would move from a big city down to Orlando. I mean it is a city, but not a big one.
" Ok well what kinds of things do you like to do?" I ask
" You know just normal things like football and basketball, you would think that I have a life, but i really don't."
"Well you do now, in small towns like this one everyone knows each other and everyone likes each other except me."
" What does that mea-,"I cut him of accidentally saying something I shouldn't.
" Nothing, never mind. How about you ask me some questions." I told him wanting to change the subject out of my popularity.
" Um, okay how about Who are you Blythe?" wow what a very deep question.
" Well, I am 17, I don't play any sports even though I have always wanted to do gymnastics, and I have a younger sister who is in 2nd grade."
" That is nice to know, but i meant who are you as a person, like deep down?"
" I don't know. I am just a nobody, someone who gets tripped in the hallway, just like you saw. No one likes me." I tell him, wondering why I would tell him this since I have literally just met him.
" Hey don't say that, everyone has something special about them, and maybe others can't see it but Blythe," He spoke" I can tell that there is something very special about you, whether it is your personality or talent, I can see that you are special." We neared the corner and went into class, fortunately there was two seats right behind my best friend.
Adeline turns around and whispers to me, " Who is the guy sitting beside you, I have never seen him before, and I saw you two laughing as you walked in?"
" I don't know, his name is Dameon and he helped me up, cause someone knocked me over. He is new and is from California ."
" Wow, that really is a long way away," she stated. I sat in my desk doing nothing for a few minutes until Mr. Camble started talking to the class about boring government. I still don't understand why people need to know these things. When class ended I headed over to lunch quarters, the best place in the school. . I went outside and sat on the beautifully colored picnic table that Adeline and I would always sit at. I was confused when I saw Adeline headed towards the table with Dameon by her side.
Once they got to the table Dameon spoke, " Adeline invited me over to sit, I hope that is okay with you?"
" That is fine why wouldn't it be?" I asked him
" Because a beautiful person like you, might not want to sit with me."He just called me beautiful. Wow never heard that directed to me before.
As I walked in the house after school I was immediately met with two out strung arms.
" How was your first day of school honey?" My mom is very involved in my life, almost to much.
" It was good, I met a new friend." She gasped. Making a new friend is not ordinary for e considering my only friend is Adeline.
" Aw honey I am so proud of you, you are growing up and getting new friends. Who is she what is her name?"
" Um, mom HIS name is dameon and he is new. He moved all the way from New York City."
" Ooh a boy. That is great hon." she paused, " your father would be so proud of you." She whispered.
I was 14 when my dad passed away due to cancer. He had been sick for a few years and he wasn't getting any better. He had fought it off many times but it somehow just didn't want to leave. The day he died was probably the worst day of my life.
" Anyway, mom can I go to Adeline's tonight?" I questioned, changing the subject.
" Yeah, sure just don't stay up to late, it is a school day tomorrow."
" I won't." I got my stuff together and left my house.
