I can’t remember what life was like before they came. I took the chance to look out the window and risk being shot at by the robots in the helicopter circling overhead outside. They were automated with robotic soldiers rounding up the humans to help them build their Empire.
“What have we done?” I asked no one in particular, careful to keep my voice low so that they couldn’t hear me.
These robots were more advanced than they should be and they just kept coming. Every day there were more and more on the streets rounding up people. I needed to leave, but how? That was the million dollar question.
They’ve raided this house before numerous times looking for something and they keep coming back, but for what? I backed away from the window slowly as I noticed one of the robots stopped marching with the others and looked towards the window I was standing at. I ran to the attic as fast as I could and hid in the hidden wall underneath the floorboards. As soon as I secured the lock to lock myself in, I heard them in the attic.
I kept very still as I saw a light roam over the room searching for what seemed like signs of life, but I knew better. I knew exactly what that light was and what it represented. I held my breath and mentally said a quick word of prayer and waited for the light to sweep where I was. It seemed like it lasted forever and then it was over. The light registered carbon dioxide emissions from the human body and was a heat seeking locator. But the heat wasn’t what I was worried about, I was in a cooler --man-made of course. I didn’t trust anything electronic anymore, not since the robots came, so I built something I knew I would be safe in.
I was one of the inventors that worked on the AI projects. Once I looked over the data and saw that things were going to go badly the further we kept developing the robots and the worse things were going to get, I brought the information I found out to the head of the foundation but he was in denial.
“It’s the way of the future, they will save us and make us millions” he said
That bastard, always thinking of the money, I guess that’s why they got to him first. His precious money couldn’t save him then. I quit before they completed the project as soon as I found out that they kept working on the project after I warned them. But not before adding a new coding, leaving way for a virus to be planted inside them.
These robots were designed to be the most intelligent beings on the planet. Able to withstand human firepower. They were to be the replacement of soldiers in the coming New Age war so there would be limited bloodshed for our country. They were contracted out to the government to be the new face of freedom. But we should have killed them when we had the chance. Now, I pray it’s not too late.
I’ve kept a close eye on them since I left the project. They have a base. They communicate to each other in a language unknown to us. They give their own orders now. They are our annihilation.
I knew something was off when the advisor to the Minister of Defence ended up dead. It was no coincidence that a robot just happened to be standing beside the minister to “keep him safe”.
I got out of the cooler and grabbed the emergency bag I kept stashed in the floor. I left that house for the last time sparing one last look behind as I blended into the cover of darkness.
My name is Nyrita, and this is the beginning of the end.
