It was only five hours before I left my old life in Brazil and started a four-year journey in South Korea.
I've always been a language lover, I've studied English, years of Spanish, and a little Japanese, and when I told my parents that I wanted to study Korean, they thought I had gone crazy, but after a long conversation and I said the salary pretension of my course, they accepted and I enrolled in Korea University - and by a miracle I got a scholarship.
In Brazil I never had many friends, I was always very reserved and homely, so it was not a great sacrifice to go to the other side of the world.
The last things I had separated were put in the suitcase with the skill of someone in a hurry and I had no idea how to pack a suitcase. Finally, after sitting on it and doing an acrobatic to find the zipper, I managed to close it.
I looked in the mirror, I was wearing my favorite lace shirt and my most comfortable pants. My blond hair, which would surely stand out in the crowd of black hair and eyes pulled, were loose and light.
I looked at the clock and a wave of nervousness rose to my throat. Until that moment I had not realized how eager I was for it. I could imagine many possibilities that would become possible from there, but what would happen days later I could never imagine.
The flight was extremely long and tiring. As soon as I stepped on Korean soil I almost cried with emotion at last being on dry land. I took a cab and headed to the university housing that would be my new home for a long time.
The room was on the fifth floor. As soon as I entered, I saw that my roommate had already settled in. The room was large and beautiful. There were two beds against the side walls. Two wardrobes, two desks and a bathroom. On the left side of the room, posters and more posters of Korean Dramas and a Korean artist were pinned to the wall. A little box and a notebook were on the desk and the bed was brimming with manga and clothes.
I changed my dirty shoes for the ones I could use in the bedroom, I went to my side of the room and put my bag on the floor. The weariness of the trip now spread through my body and all I wanted to do was lie down. I threw myself on the soft mattress and soon I dozed. When I woke up I saw a girl with short hair and eyes pulled staring at me. I got up scared.
"Sorry to scare you!" The girl shook her hands in exasperation. "I was just curious to meet you." She held out her hand. "My name is Minami, I'm Japanese."
"Isabella. Brazilian" We shake hands.
"So, have you seen anything from Seoul?"
"Not yet. I came in now ..."I looked at the clock and I had slept five hours. " My God! I overslept."
"Yes! Haha. It's time for dinner. How about we leave. Then we can get to know each other better"
Before I could answer she was already choosing a suit. Since I was feeling 90% better, I took a shower and put on a long-sleeved blouse. When I left the bathroom I saw that Minami was putting another poster of a man on the wall.
"Who is he?" I asked.
She widened her eyes.
"What do you mean, who is he? He is Lee Jong-Suk, simply the best and most beautiful actor and Korean model that ever existed, in my opinion." She sighed. "And, the best, our college friend!"
"Classmate? Is he going to study here?"
"Yes!!! It's not perfect?"
"Why is he going to college?"
"In an interview he said that he was longing to study and he wanted to put his head to burn some neurons again. Then he announced that he would study here!"
"Um, very cool." I said nonchalantly.
The next day the classes started and I could not be more nervous. Minami stayed in almost every class with me, which calmed me down a bit. The first class was a Korean language, and then came the mixed classes for all who studied languages. We were going to the auditorium where the class would be when Minami froze at my side. I stopped and followed her gaze, and I saw a tall, thin boy standing out in the crowd and recognizing the posters. It was Lee Jong-Suk, the actor.
He passed and a sea of students opened up to him. All the girls sighed, including Minami. He entered the auditorium and sat down in the last row. All the girls hurried to sit as close to him as possible, but no one sat next to him.
I did not know he was in the language seats and I wondered what language he would be doing.
We sat in the middle rows just before the teacher entered the room. He was a short, fat man with a friendly look. He positioned himself in the pulpit in front of the painting and picked up a pen.
"Welcome, everyone! I hope you are enjoying the first day of classes here at Korea University. This class will be a bit different from the others. I took the liberty of studying about each of you and your areas of interest, and based on the information I collected, I decided that you would form pairs that will help each other during the first semester of study here."
He opened a heavy folder.
"These pairs will aim to share language skills, which will make testing easier and will certainly be an effective method for faster learning. I'm going to ask the couple to submit a short report of their performance each month. If anyone has any questions just ask me. So let's start."
The class was quite large, so it took a while to get to me and Minami.
"Minami Aihara and James Porter. " We look sad that we are not together.
He went on.
"Keyla Watson and Ga Sun-Hee. Augustine Busson and Megan Smith."
He paused. I realized that until that moment the name of the actor had not yet left. The girls whose names had not yet been spoken looked at the teacher hopefully. Until finally he said, but to my surprise and theirs, I think he could not have stayed with anyone more unexpected.
"Isabella Santana and Lee Jong-Suk."
