Jonathan had been a greedy person for almost his entire life. He would always keep everything to himself, and took whatever chance he could to get more. Whether it was more materialistic things such as money or expensive objects, or it was things such as food, he always wanted more of it. He had been disciplined due to his behavior, it wasn’t anywhere near enough to change his ways. This had continued throughout the years and had shown no sign of slowing down or stopping. While Jonathan had never seen the issue of his obsessive ways of living, it was becoming apparent that only negatives were coming to face the man. He had recently started to pile on debt due to his compulsive gambling. It had been going on for months, and it was starting to catch up to him. With his pay becoming less and less due to a drop in performance it started to get worse. With his bills to pay for along with his mortgage, he needed a way to change his life, or else he was screwed. He had recently got home from a long day at the office. He had went to the fridge to grab something to eat, and noticed he had barely anything left. Just some eggs, bread, milk, and sandwich meat. Sighing, he decided to just tough it out and go shopping the next day. He changed from his work clothes into more casual clothing and decided to go to sleep. He had the next day off so he could sleep in a little. He fell asleep almost immediately after his head hit the pillow. He slept soundly, with nothing to wake him from his slumber. He had opened his eyes to a new scene, a blank room? No, he corrected himself, it more closely resembled a never ending canvas, a plane white floor with a never ending sky above his head. It looked close enough to touch, but as he reached out to it, it simply retracted from his hand, leaving a small indent in the sky. As he retracted his hand, it returned to its previously flat appearance. He looked around, spotting nothing in the distance he started to slightly panic, but grew calmer as he realized it was just a dream. He had continued to explore the “dream canvas” as he named it. It seemed to last hours to him, yet it had only been minutes. His exploration led to his eyes landing on a small, white table. Atop the table lay a wooden box. As he approached the table he tried remain cautious of his surroundings, not confident in his own answer of just where he was. Trying to shake the thoughts from his head, he continued walking towards the table. As he arrived he noticed a black, fountain pen resting neatly next to the box. He approached the table, noticing the small engravings on the box. He was now directly in front of the table, nothing out of the ordinary had happened, so he convinced himself once again, it was just a dream. He lifted up the box to inspect it closer noticing small engravings of what seemed to be angels and demons fighting each other. It sent a shiver down his spine. He placed the box back down on the table, debating in his mind what to do. He didn’t see a reason to place distrust within the box, but then again, what harm could a box bring him. Oh of only he knew. He decided to go with the option of opening the box. Slowly he lifted the lid, carefully checking the contents. Inside lie a small piece of paper with a simple sentence written on it; “Do you want to escape it all?”. He looked back at the pen on the table. Was he supposed to answer it? He looked back and forth and decided to answer. He grabbed the pen and turned the paper, placing it on the table. He wrote his answer on the back. Writing a simple “Yes” on the it, he placed the paper back in the box, closing the lid, and placing both the box and pen back on the table. He waited for a few seconds for some kind of reaction. The box than suddenly shook, causing him to jump back slightly, before returning to its previous dormant state on the table. He waited even longer for some type of reaction, to which he received none. He once again checked his surroundings. Nothing had changed. He kept questioning what to do, and yet again decided to reopen the box and check its contents. It lifted the lid, quicker than when he originally did. A larger, folded piece of paper was no inside. He removed the folded paper and placed the box back on the table. Unfolding the paper, he began reading its contents. “If you truly wish to escape it all, an live the best life you could imagine, then give me something worth my time. give me something that no matter how hard you can try, you will never get back.” He stopped reading for a few seconds. Just what was he getting himself into? Just who was the person writing these notes. He kept questioning it before realizing something. If the paper was telling the truth, then.. He cut himself of from his imagination and continued reading. “Give me something that every living creature has one of. Give me your soul. Do this and I will give you everything you desire”. His soul? He didn’t know what to think. Should he do it? His life was going down the drain. He kept questioning it. He couldn’t think straight, he was too confused to even realize that he was already signing his name at the bottom of the page. He stopped just before he finished and stared at the page. “Screw it”, he thought, finishing his signature. The paper disappeared from the table along with the box. He placed the pen down and backed up. The pen than disappeared along with the table. He looked around himself once again, only to see the space around him start to decay rapidly. The darkness started to consume entirety of the space. Leaving him alone in the darkness. The temperature started to rapidly drop, almost to freezing temperatures. Jonathan started to panic. He heard louds cracks coming from all around him, rapidly turning his head to look in the direction of each one. He noticed small cracks forming in the floor beneath him, slowly creeping up on him. The ground beneath him suddenly opened up, and he started to free fall. His brain was working at full capacity trying to find a way out of this mess. He could feel his heartbeat progressively speeding up. He looked down and spotted a small patch of white quickly approaching. He grew horrified. He thought this was the end of him, but as he was about to hit the floor, he woke up. He jolted straight out of his bed in a cold sweat. He was breathing extremely hard. He looked around himself to check if he was back in the real world. Much to his relief he was, and his life was just about to get better. Over the course of a few years, the train known as Jonathan’s life was back on the rails and heading towards its next destination. His life had down a complete 180. He had a job that paid him handsomely, a nice house, and a good family. His rain of good fortune lasted for about 6 years. Until then not a single day went by where he had any regret for what he did that day. The thought of what would happen in the end always ran through his head. Every day he tried to forget, but he never could. The memory kept resurfacing, and he couldn’t keep it submerged. All his life had been happy from that day forward, until one day it all went wrong. The company he had been working for went bankrupt. He obviously lost his job, he thought it would just be a minor setback, boy was he wrong. A week later his son was diagnosed with cancer. To add on to his bad karma his wife was sent into a coma a few days after due to a car crash. His world came tumbling down on top of him. He didn’t know how to handle it. He fell into a depression, along with the pilling up stress of having to quickly find another job to pay for the hospital bills, medial insurance can only do so much. It just kept getting worse, and one day it just ended. Not the stress, or bills, or countless setbacks. His life did, the stress had gotten the best of him. In the middle of the night when he was resting soundly, the Devil came to collect his debt, and collect his debt he did. His friends and family, along with any else only had one answer, the stress finally caught up to him. Died of a stroke in his sleep. Jonathan hadn’t told anyone of the deal he made that night, an understandable choice. Who would want to tell anyone they made a deal with the devil, they would be labeled insane. The only one to know of the deal besides Jonathan, was the one he made the deal with, and how he waited to claim his prize. He had waited and waited, and he got impatient. He decide to claim his fruit early, and when he did he got lucky. The fruit was just perfect, a perfect mixture of sweet and sour
