Chapter I

I stood at the crosswalk staring at the concrete for who knows how long. I was just rejected by the third hero school I applied to. Sure it had been a little late to apply; however, that shouldn't have mattered. But it finally occurred to me that I am never getting into the hero course. At this point, I might as well convert to the villain's side.

But that is not an option for me. I NEED to become a hero. I NEED to save others. I can't stand by and watch as these people around me slaughtered and torture each other over petty greed and the feeling of being above others.

I get it though.

The feeling of wanting a purpose. The feeling of wanting to be known for something other than "the guy who does mediocre jobs".

I could feel the tears welling up in my eyes and I clenched my fists as I was forced back into reality. The last school was the hardest to get into and I doubt they are accepting applicants. All their classes should be filled. But maybe, just maybe, I could be considered. Sure, I'm not the nicest or friendliest of people. But I could control my quirk well enough to be considered. Everything else I need to know, I could be taught in school and I am a pretty fast learner.

I glanced up and saw the walking sign turn green. I crossed the street and at that moment I saw someone. It was more like the uniform that caught my eyes.

It was the UA uniform.

I opened my mouth to get their attention, but I closed it just as fast. What was I going to say to them? There isn't any reason to talk to a student. But I feel like it was still needed. My feet then started moving on their own.

I was following the student, keeping on their trail. It was after school hours so I can assume I was following them home. I kept my head down and shoved my hands into the pockets of my hoodie. It was hotter outside for being mid-June, but I couldn't care less.

It has been days and I still haven't worked up the courage to confront this student, who I learned is named Midoriya Izuku, or Deku as he is called by his friends. I usually try to stay as far away from his as possible when he is at school or with his friends. However, it has become increasingly hard as I began to learn what he learned in his classes. I was completely immersed and I don't want to stop.

I was then faced with reality one day while I was stopped waiting for the go-ahead to cross the street. I felt a gentle tap on my shoulder. I jumped and turned to face my worst nightmare.

There was the kid I had been "stalking" for the past few weeks. I swallowed down the lump in my throat as I looked into his eyes. I could feel my body heat up in nervousness. He knows. I could feel my heart rate pick up and my breathing getting faster and shallower. It was like a virus. The feeling of dread wouldn't go away no matter what I did to try and fix it.

"Um, excuse me." He let out a soft mumble. I tried to look anywhere else other than his eyes. That was when I caught a glimpse of his friends in the background. The girl who made things float, the guy with engines for his calves, and the son of Endeavor. They were all staring intently at me. Let me clarify. They were glaring at me. They must have seen me one too many times and started suspecting that I was following their friend. Why didn't they confront me themselves if they had a suspicion? I could have been a villain! But considering what just happened at USJ I would be nervous to confront a villain as well.

"Excuse me?" There was his voice again and my eyes trained back on him. I let out a strained "yes" and swallowed down yet another lump in my throat.

"Hi, um... I was wondering, are you following me? I MEAN- that's what my friends are saying and all..."

A numbing sensation shot through my body at an alarming rate. That question had by the root of my worries and I hadn't realized how bad it would sound out loud through his lips. I grimaced and looked down and kicked a small rock with the toe of my shoe. "Uh... yeah..."

"W-Why?"

It took a bit of internal struggle to get the words out. Even then, you could hear the cracks in my voice from nervousness.

"I'm just someone who has nowhere else to go and doesn't want to end up a villain..."

My eyes roamed up his short frame and focused on his eyes. There was surprise swirled into his irises and what seemed to be a bit of sympathy?

"What do you mean by that?"

I could feel my toes curl up in my worn converse. I let out a soft mumble. "I don't want to talk here..." That's when I saw it. The flaw in my quirk control. I could see the wisps of black mist coming off of my hands and neck. I instantly pulled up my hood and hid my hands. My quirk was something that wasn't really used for offense. It was that reason I didn't like revealing it.

I knew that the fear of my lack of control flickered in my eyes as the crease between Midoriya's eyebrows got deeper.

"Where can we talk?" He spoke firmly and I knew that he wasn't going to give up on getting a chance to talk to me.

"Under the overpass...without your friends..." I could see the recognition register in his face as he realized that I knew his friends were watching.

At that moment I took my chance and fled away from him and his confused expression and curious nature.

I hadn't realized that I was pleading with myself that he wouldn't follow through and head to the overpass. I didn't want to have to explain myself to him. I didn't want to have to listen as my dreams are crushed and my fears are coming to life. I didn't want to suddenly enter a world I was unfamiliar with. It was a simple thought that struck me hard.

I don't want to attend UA.
