"Abhaya, get back," I told her. She looked back at me, seeming to be even closer to column of darkness swirling near her.
"Alex, it's fine. Look." she said, stepping forward, "Nothing's happening. It's just... a weird column-looking thing. I'm going to go touch it, okay? I mean, it's not like I'll die. Already did that."
"Are you insane? What if something happens? What if you get stuck? What if y-"
"Alex, stop overthinking it." She took a breath. "How mamy times do I need to remind you that sometimes you have to take the leap and not look back," Abhaya stepped closer, and waved her hand through the dark smoke. "Look, it's completely fine," she took the final step forward, and was quickly surrounded by the shadow of a column. "See?" she said, with a small smile on her face. "It's completely harmless. I don't know why you were so worrie-"
I woke up suddenly, looking up at the ceiling of my home, the image of her face fading quickly. I kept dreaming about her. Ever since she had vanished 12 days, fourteen hours, and about 12 minutes ago more and more people were disappearing. I guess they got curious too. That was always Abhaya's biggest weakness.
You could see all their faces on the signs lining the street, not that anyone was really searching anymore. All anyone was doing was either hiding or running. The column that Abhaya had disappeared in has only been spreading. It's about ten times the size it was. Now it takes up the entire courtyard it showed up in.
I eventually heard my mom downstairs and decided to get up. I got dressed into a leather jacket and blue jeans that complemented my hazel eyes and blonde hair. Once I got to the bathroom I tied up my hair into my usual ponytail with a black elastic and brushed my teeth.
I never understood the carpet that was in the narrow hallway leading downstairs. It read, "Life isn't worth living without love." I just... I don't get it is because I'm dead. We're all dead. Why would someone put a quote about life in the afterlife? It makes no sense. Plus, I wouldn't be able to relate to anyway, even if I was alive.
I walked into the kitchen and saw my mom making pancakes at the stove in the corner, along with Zara setting the table. Zara looked absolutely gorgeous, as always. With her small frame and beautiful brown eyes, she looked like a model. She has always been like a sister to me.
"Alex, don't just stand there. Come on and eat," Zara said, as my mom put the hot pancakes on the table. "Actually, scratch that, go get everyone else."
"Okay." I said, rolling my eyes. "Hey, lazy people! We've got food," I shouted. Zara looked at me disapprovingly.
"Y'know, I could have done that."
"Yeah, but you didn't so-"
"True," she replied, cutting me off.
As if on cue, I heard someone running down the stairs. Alexander rushed into the kitchen. I smiled. Something about his energy was just so positive that you had to be happy when he was around.
"I heard food," he shouted excitedly.
"Yeah, yeah," Zara said, putting the silver napkin holder on the large dinner table. "Shut up and sit down. We have to leave today."
People started trickling in as she was talking, and as soon as they heard it, the mood dampened. No one wanted to leave, especially when we had just gotten used to our new home. We had to though. We lived too close to the column of darkness to stay. Not unless we wanted to disappear. We should probably come up with a name for it too.
"Enough of that reminder for now, huh?" said Orla, who had just walked in. "Now, let's eat!"
All six of us gathered around the table. In all, it was me, mom, Zara, Alexander, Orla, and Mishal. We all were thinking about the empty seat next to us, where Ab used to sit. We began to eat the pancakes our mom made us.
~~~~~~
Once we all finished, mom told us to get our bags that we had packed the night before, and bring them to the front door. I walked up to my room. Slowly though. I wanted to treasure these last moments before we had to leave them behind, probably forever. Who knows, we might die again. Or we might be back in a few days. There's really no way to tell.
I walked into my room, probably for the last time. I looked longingly at the posters on my wall, my lofted bed with the fairy lights beneath it. My navy blue bag was next to my desk chair. I grabbed it quickly and walked out of the door, closing it slowly. I went back downstairs, past the odd rug in the hallway, and met the rest of my family downstairs. We all stood at the door, preparing ourselves for leaving this beautiful house, and waiting for what was to come.
"Well, what are we waiting for, my mom said, opening the door. "Let's go."
