I crossed paths near the market streets easily; I was so familiar with them and they had a tingle of a homely feeling containing them since I practically flourished little by little here and would linger at these parts for some time, no matter how dangerous people thought it was I naturally learned to value my playground.
Almost majority of the merchant's eyes shifted colors which could have only meant one thing. They were vampires, in this territory most of them were, you'd find it rare on occasion to come across money dealers, and the jobs for actual money were even more limited. I was pretty thankful that dad could find a job at all... at least for preserving it this long.
A way to recognize vampires and by far the most reachable was simply staring in their eyes, they would frequently change. One of the various tales that people absolutely loved to gossip about, was in fact, that one secret they reserved to themselves, their eyes. Coincidently that was the single riddle of many which had, with my persistence, detangled its mysteries, unraveling an ancient event and deciphering the old blur into my mind with every word Adrian had sounded. The day he answered that one interrogation that lasted a couple of days, like so many at the blossoming days of our friendship. I, of course, tried to get other puzzling stories about his race out of him, but they were all failed attempts to uncover explanations. I had then sworn on my half-bald doll of mine that I would figure him out someday.
The story always seemed fascinating while Adrian told it; maybe because when he revealed it to me, I was even more childish than I am now, annually and mentally. It was told like the bedtime story I never got to hear from either my parents. Maybe the charm about the tale was that it contained every child's sweeping fantasy, magic and wizards, or for this tale the latter, one wizard.
Not human nor a vampire, the only one of his kind, 'Marcellus'. He preferred the humans' side and devoted all his magic for their account and sake. He battled against vampires, and on his final day of existent, it is rumored he congregated all the magic he was acquainted with into planting vampires to an undying curse that hopefully would be prominent enough to people's eyes to detect them and take caution of their wickedness through their changing eyes due to Marcellus's spell. He died with no descendants to come after him, or at least, that’s what the legend discloses.
I marched hearing people promoting what goods they had to offer! While others clutched blood bags offering them to the dealers, the more occasional sight. Only rarely did people prefer the Vampires to attain the price directly –through a bite- and the outmost of buyers exchanged their blood in containers or bags, to prevent the dark creatures from sinking their teeth into their necks. Our town's citizens had too much pride to make themselves appear weak. They ended up choosing the alternative, bloodbags, which in my opinion, was a pretty good damn choice.
I scanned all the people surrounding me but couldn’t find the desired face, I hunted my tiredness out of me with my imaginary sword as I kept searching and exploring the ranges I hardly gave a visit. Still not finding him, I looked up even in the tiniest areas and the biggest fields until I covered a fairly far distance and into a place where the people seemed eager to crush others with their frowns and the evil aura surrounding them to prevent anyone getting at a close point from them. And boy, did those frowns look demon-made.
I contemplated questioning other vampires about the dealer I needed, but decided to ask someone from my own kind. I headed up to an unfamiliar person a middle aged red headed woman with dark eyes that seemed full of malevolence. I went back to my memory of the man; attempting to recall the small incident I had with him to recollect his features in my head enough to portray him right.
