I stared at the phone, chest tight like someone was sittin’ on it.
“Listen to me,” she said, voice firmer now. “You are the child of Evelyn Agu. That woman was stronger than steel. You got her blood. You don’t let them break you. You hear me?”
I nodded, though I knew she couldn’t see it. “Okay.”
“The holidays ain’t far. We’ll get through ‘til then. I promise.”
“Okay,” I said again, softer this time.
“I love you, Kween.”
“I love you too, Auntie.”
I hung up and tossed my phone onto the bed, staring out the window. The rain came down heavy, like the sky itself was sobbing. It was supposed to be sunny today. But of course not. Not in my world.
Just a dark-ass Saturday.
I got up and tiptoed into the living room, checking on Artemis. She was still knocked out in her little playpen, breathing deep like she ain’t got a care in the world. I smiled weakly, brushing a curly strand off her forehead.
“Your daddy lucky to have you, lil mama,” I whispered. “Wonder when he comin’ back.”
It was already almost six. He left at nine this morning, said nothing else. Maddie was helping Charles at the office, so it was just me and Artemis today. Which, honestly, was the best part of my week.
But the rest of me? I was unraveling.
My head started pounding again. I rubbed at my temples, groaning as I made my way to the bathroom. I ransacked the medicine cabinet—nothing but cotton balls, old Tylenol packs, and razors. After twenty minutes, I gave up.
“Fuck this…” I muttered, leaning over the sink.
And that’s when I felt her.
Her.
That little voice that shows up when I’m on the edge.
“I can always take over if this too much.”
“Nope,” I said to the mirror. “Not today.”
“Aww, come on, baby… You know you miss me.”
I turned, and there she was—leaning against the doorway like she owned the place. Olive green eyes piercing through me. Same face. Same body. Just… darker. Edgier.
“Hey, Ghen baby,” Scorpio smirked.
“Scorpio, not now.” I groaned.
“You know that ain’t how it work,” she said, rolling her eyes. “You spiralin’, and I’m here to catch the fall.”
“This not real… This not real…” I whispered, pacing. “When I open my eyes, you gon’ be gone.”
I closed my eyes, held my breath… and opened them.
She was sittin’ on the bed. Legs crossed, flipping through a Vibe magazine like she lived here.
“Yeah… nah. Still here.”
I dropped onto the bed, defeated. “I can’t take this shit.”
“You say that every time,” she replied, not even looking up. “Then you bounce back. Just like a phoenix. But you ain’t flyin’ this time, mama. You drownin’.”
“I’m not drowning,” I snapped. “I’m just tired. That’s it.”
“Mmm. You was tired last time too. Remember how that went? You look just like you did then—hollow, dimmed out. Just gone, baby.”
I turned to her, tears threatening again. “Don’t bring up the past…”
“I have to,” she snapped. “’Cause you forget. You forget how hard you fought just to breathe again.”
I turned away, pulling my knees to my chest. “I’m hurting… I’m hurtin’ so bad I don’t even know how to explain it.”
Scorpio’s voice softened. “That’s why I’m here. Let me help you. Let me carry it for a while. You ain't gotta feel it all at once. We in this together. Always have been.”
She scooted closer, holding out her hand.
I stared at it, hand trembling, then reached out slowly—fingers brushing against hers.
“We in this together. No matter what.”
That was the last thing I heard before the darkness pulled me under again.
