My name is Liliana and I have just moved half way across the country to the city of no ends. Los Angeles. My father got transferred from his small office in Indiana to corporate headquarters in Cali and my mom and I are anything but ecstatic. Our life was good back in our home town, but Dad will do anything for a pay raise.
I'm half way through my junior year and tomorrow I begin classes at my new school. I'm not very nervous people won't like me, I'm not a mean person or absurdly rude or anything. It's that I'm afraid people will notice me. I prefer to stay under the radar, that way there isn't as much of a chance of me making a fool of myself. Being the new girl isn't a great way to do that, especially if you start attending a school half way through the year. I guess I'll just have to wait and see.
The next morning
"Morning Mom."
"Good morning sweetheart, ready for your first day?"
My mom always makes the best breakfast, especially on important days like this.
"Ready as I'll ever be."
"You'll be just fine. Remember, if you need anything, anything at all, you just call me and I'll be right there. Okay honey?"
"Okay mom. Thank you for breakfast, I better start heading out or I'll be late. Love you, see you after school!"
"Love you too, good luck today!"
I close the back door and start heading towards my car. I've always loved driving by myself. I get to blast my music as loud as I want and sing at the top of my lungs. Music has always been a huge part of my life. In Indiana I was the lead singer in a band and we played gigs almost every weekend. I was so upset that I had to leave the band behind, I'll never forget the memories I made onstage and offstage with them.
I've been singing since I could talk and playing guitar since I was big enough to hold one. Music provides a little escape from the world. I try to do at least an hour of singing everyday, it serves as sort of a meditation to me, which is something I'm extremely grateful for.
I must have been jamming pretty hard in the car, after what seems like two minutes I'm already pulling into the school parking lot. The stereo is still blaring, which I didn't notice until people starting staring. I quickly kill the volume and duck behind the steering wheel to hide my face. Good job Lili, great way to start off your academic career at North High. I wait a minute or two, hoping the stares would die down, before I grab my bag and step out of the car. I begin walking to the front entrance. So far so good, I haven't seen anyone stare. I enter the school and grab a school map I printed from the website to try and find the front office. I need my schedule from the secretary. She mentioned something about a tour guide on the phone, someone who walks me to all my classes and shows me around the school so I get used to everything, I'm assuming Principal Adams will be doing that.
I'm looking at the map when out of nowhere I collide with god knows what and fall straight to the ground, spilling the contents of my backpack all over.
"Oh my god, I'm so sorry, are you alright?"
"Uh yeah yeah, I'm fine sorry that was my fault I should've been paying attention. I was just trying to find the front office and I got lost and—" I keep my eyes glued to the floor, afraid to make eye contact with the guy that I hit, let alone the stares people are surely giving us right now. Whoever I bumped into is helping me with my loose papers, putting them neatly in folders and placing them in my backpack, while I just shove them in there, making even more of a mess than before. Suddenly someone grabs my hands.
"Hey, calm down, it's alright. I'm going to the office too, I'll show you where it is. I'm Ethan by the way. Ethan Dolan. Nice to meet you."
I glance up and see the man before me. His hand is extended, waiting for me to shake it.
"Liliana. Nice to meet you too."
