A/N : Hey guys! This is me trying a different genre for the first time so do let me know your thoughts about this :) happy reading :D

Helpless - That was how I felt when I heard footsteps approaching. I didn't know this was bound to happen when I woke up in the morning. To me, it was supposed to be a normal and quiet day. I just wanted to grab my usual coffee and spend a cozy afternoon in the library.

But I didn't know my usual day would turn out to be my worst nightmare. My footsteps echoed along the silent pavement that I rarely used. But I didn't know why I used it today of all days. I was far too distracted to notice the silent figure lurking behind the shadows of the brightly lit alley.

It was all just in a fraction of seconds when a hand covered over my mouth, the filthy stench filling up my senses, the harsh breath tearing into the nape of my neck giving me the feeling of being thrown close to the hell well.

My thrashing limbs met no aims nor did they do any proper damage as I felt myself being lifted up into the air as the cloaked figure walked us into the deeper pits of the alley. My screams were muffled and deeply burried into his hands.

Who was this guy? What did he want from me? Why was he doing this to me? A lot of questions began popping up in my mind but he gave me no time to ponder over any of them as he threw me onto the gravelled path at the end of the alley.

I clenched my stomach trying to concentrate on my breathing, desperate to find a way to escape. I tired to crawl away from him but he dragged me back and shoved me against the wall. I heard a crack come from somewhere and only when I felt blood trickling down the back of my neck did I feel that the crack was actually from my head.

But beyond the pain in my head, I felt my life being sucked out as I heard him laugh. I have never heard something so vile and disturbing. He was the devil in human form. I knew my end was there and there was no way I was finding a way to escape.

A ray of light, any little sense of hope, that was all that I was looking for. But his darkness overshadowed my search of light. But I didn't want to let him fill my space up. I wanted to grab the light and find a way out.

I coughed out blood as if it was the most normal thing to do and he looked at me with a sly smile, with complete satisfaction of what he was doing to me. What was this guy?

I heard something clatter as he dug into his pocket and took out a knife. That was it, he was going to end my life. I was getting myself ready for the inevitable. But I just wanted to know the reason behind all of this.

"Why?" I chocked out. "Because," I couldn't hear the end of his sentence as sweat dripped down my face. There was no dark alley anymore, I saw light, too bright to have appeared in a fraction of second. Was that death? Was it supposed to be that way?

I clutched the sheets to my chest as I downed the entire glass of water in one go. A dream. But no, there was some kind of reality there. What could it be? I pushed myself out of the bed, trying my best to throw the thoughts away from my mind.

I grabbed my usual coffee and found myself in front of the same alley. A curious person I was, sulking behind my own shadows, giving into the desires of my curiosity. I didn't know what I was looking for. Answers? Or perhaps a hooded figure to just give all mercy to my doubts.

Or maybe I didn't see the dark figure that was walking along with me the entire way, only that the light within me was too bright to let the darkness to overshadow me. Grit? What do you call it? Determination? I didn't know what to call it.

But to me, darkness will always lurk, for the light within me can disappear only if I want it to.
