Day 261, 2062

"As you know, there are a specific set of rules that your child must follow. And thanks to our new technology, we can confirm that your child is a Type A."

"A boy? But we said in the paperwork that we wanted a gir-"

"Yes, Anya, we know you wanted a Type B." The man sighed, as though he too had wanted a girl.

"But our world needs more power and authority. You are part of the large amount of people that are getting Type A's. And until we reach the level we need, there will not be anymore Type B's being produced."

He pushed a paper across his desk, filled with the words I wished I didn't have to read.

Rules: Type A

• Each child must be properly cared for until the age of which they may be left on their own (subject to goverment delay).

• Each child must be raised according to the strict set of guidelines in the 'Parenting a Type A' parent guide.

• Children must not use/wear/own anything that does not represent Type A as a whole.

• Your child's hair must remain the color it's assigned to. Any dyeing of the hair will result in immediate arrest of the parent and child until a goverment employee can look over the case and decide upon an appropriate punishment.

• Your Type A child must stay within the dress code set in the 'Parenting a Type A' parent guide. To summarize, no dresses, no skirts, no tight pants, no revealing clothes, no clothes that are made for and/or marketed towards Type B's. Your child must always wear a shirt and *at least* a pair of underwear.

• Your child must live by the rules set for him in the 'Type A Life' rulebook.

• Your child must stay within these rules and guidelines at all times. Failure to do so will result in public punishment.

• You must dutifully follow the rules set for you in your parenting handbook. Failure to do so will result in public punishment.

I looked up from the paper.

"Are these the only rules?"

The man laughed a harsh laugh and looked me in the face with a knowing look.

"Of course not. You remember your rulebook, right?"

I grimaced at the thought.

"That's how your son's rulebook will be. And don't get any fancy ideas. Not enforcing the rules leads to punishments similar to last week's public lineup."

I got up and picked up the paper, my bag, and my keys.

"Well thank you for everything, I better get going." I left the normal dime and quarter before walking out with a sigh.

Will things ever be normal again?
