their backs have never felt the touch of the whip, but the welts are still raw.

when they close their eyes, they can see the receding shoreline of the homeland, and feel the nauseating rocking of the boat.

their hearts don't know pain, don't know pain like their ancestors did, but it still hurts.

the religious turn to scripture for an excuse.

it's his will, they say. it's the way the father made us.

the preacher claims to speak the words of god, but the devil controls his tongue.
