As we walk through the darkness......

Start from the beginning

She looked up at me with those wide curious eyes, all innocence. That lil smile tugged on her lips like she saw right through me, like she just knew something. I swear it made my chest tighten.

She reached up, grabbed a piece of my hair gently and started twirling it between her fingers, grinning bigger like she just discovered treasure.

“You like it?” I asked softly, smiling down at her. “Would you believe me if I told you this my actual hair color?”

She just snuggled into me, her small hand still clutchin’ my curls. My heart? Meltin’.

“You are so cute,” I whispered, chuckling a little.

BAM.

“STUPID BITCH, GET AWAY FROM MY SHIT!” Zeus’s voice boomed out as the truck door slammed shut, snappin’ me right outta my moment. I jumped a little.

Anisha was outside, wildin’—pounding on the driver’s window, mouth movin’ but I couldn’t hear her over the glass. Zeus didn’t even look at her, just turned the truck on and sped off, leavin’ her in a cloud of dust and crazy.

“You good?” he asked once we hit the freeway.

I looked down at the baby curled up in my arms, already asleep. I nodded. “Yeah. She went right out.”

We finally got back to the house. He killed the engine, hopped out, and came around to open my door. I handed her off carefully as I grabbed my phone and wallet.

“Come on,” he said, reachin’ his hand out for me.

“Oh no, it’s fi—”

“Ghenesis, come on.” His voice was low, tired. Like he ain’t have it in him to argue.

So I sighed and took his hand, lettin’ him help me out the truck. We walked inside quietly, the front door clickin’ shut behind us.

“Ghenesis? Zeus?” Maddison’s voice called out from the kitchen. She came around the corner, wiping her hands on a dish towel.

Zeus didn’t even stop. He just kept walking up the stairs with the baby in his arms.

“Wait—what happened? Why is Artemis here?” she asked, brows furrowed.

Artemis? Oh... that’s her name.

“Uh… I’m not really sure,” I said, dodging the question. “Your guess as good as mine.”

I wasn’t tryna snitch. That wasn’t my place. Plus, Zeus already carryin’ enough heat—I ain’t need none of it thrown at me.

Maddison sighed heavy. “Oh Lord, I hope Charles is workin’ late. I’d hate for him to see her here.”

“Why does it sound so bad?” I asked, confused.

“Because unfortunately, it is.” She looked away. “Charles don’t see her as his granddaughter. He said she’s not part of this family… banned her from the house.”

I blinked. “What? Why?”

Maddison swallowed. “He says she’ll be more of a burden than a blessing.”

I shook my head. “Aren’t all kids a little bit of a handful?”

She paused, then said quietly, “No… It’s because she’s autistic.”

---

I went upstairs a little while later and saw Artemis layin’ in a playpen in the living room area, fast asleep. Zeus was out on the balcony, posted up, starin’ at the city with a lit blunt between his fingers.

I froze for a second, unsure if I should go out there or just mind my business and head to my room.

But something made my feet move.

I stood in the balcony doorway, hesitatin'. He had his back to me, the city lights bouncin’ off his skin.

I opened my mouth, but before I could say anything—

“My bad for all this shit,” he mumbled, snuffin’ out the blunt and leanin’ over the railing.

“Oh no, you good… I was actually comin’ to see if you was okay,” I replied, keepin’ my voice soft.

“I’m calm,” he said flat.

But calm don’t always mean peaceful.

He took a deep breath, hands grippin’ the railing tight, knuckles pale. “All the shit I went through with that girl… I never thought I’d reach a point where I’d want her dead.”

I didn’t move.

“This my karma,” he said. “I knew I ain’t like her like that. I ain’t even want a relationship. But I still messed around, still had a baby with her. And when it came down to it, I took responsibility. Did what I had to do.”

His eyes darkened. Red-rimmed. Exhausted.

“But she was out here doin’ cocaine while pregnant with my baby girl. Damn near OD’d. Had a seizure, went into a coma.”

He took a breath, jaw tight.

“I was so mad. I hated her. But I still sat in that room prayin’ for her and the baby to make it.” He paused, voice crackin'. “I killed the man who was sellin’ it to her.”

My stomach turned.

“…Is that why you did the two years?”

He nodded.

“Artemis was born four months early,” he said. “She got diagnosed with autism at six months. I was already inside by then. Other than the pictures Maddie sent… this the first time I seen her in person since I got out.”

He looked through the glass back toward the playpen.

“I got a call from Nico today. Said one of our foot soldiers saw Anisha come to the trap already high… tryin’ to sell Artemis for more drugs.”

My hand flew to my mouth.

His voice cracked again. “She really tried to sell my baby.”

I couldn’t stop myself—I stepped forward and wrapped my arms around him. He didn’t move at first, just stood stiff while I held him. Then I felt his arms slide around my waist, pullin’ me in.

And we just stood there. Swayin’ back and forth.

Silent. Shattered. Soft.

I ain’t even realize I was cryin’ too.

I didn’t say nothin’ else. I just held him tighter.
