Humanity is facing its end. All of earth's natural resources are depleted, there are too many people and little supplies. Mankind is facing extinction, but he refuses to die. Humans started travelling the galaxy in search of resources on several planets and moons and soon inhabited them as the Sovereign Colonies. But that hasn't proven enough to sustain their life. 200 years ago, mankind discovered an ancient alien treasure called the Black Marker. It showed infinite sources of energy and mankind wanted to harness that, unfortunately, an outbreak spread and it was destroyed. Desperate, EarthGov created duplicates from an unknown amount of patients who could see its blueprinted while others went mad. The time period when the first Red Marker was built is unknown but they created three duplicates in hope for that energy. Each one was sent to a planet for testing but soon chaos spread, on every test facility the Sovereign Colonies Armed Forces which was the government for the Sovereign Colonies, had lost contact with the crew, they didn't know what had happened until they sent teams to investigate. They found a twisted amalgamation of what the marker would do to the dead bodies they found, they called the creatures Necromorphs, just like the Black Marker. There was an outbreak of those things for years with no one knowing what to do until a group of SCAF military forces made an act out of desperation, to contain the marker on a planet called Tau Volantis.

When they arrived they found the planet was once inhabited with aliens who worshipped the markers and made many copies and had the same outbreak on that planet as well. They soon went mad and SCAF decided they couldn't keep the markers in control, so all the testing facilities were shut off from the public and the markers were turned off. Mankind barely managed to survive once the necromorph outbreak had ceased with SCAF destroyed, the three marker test planets shut off from the people, and now resources were more depleted than ever and wars began between certain groups and EarthGov.

Almost 200 years after the marker crisis, mankind decided it needed resources and thus the Concordance Extraction Corporation or CEC was made. It had several mining ships with gravity tethers that would crack open a planet and proceed to mine its resources. This lasted a full 11 years but over time planet cracking was seen as unwise since it would disrupt many moons and planets natural elements and could destroy them or make them uninhabitable. In a desperate attempt for survival, an illegal mining operation took place in 2508, where the CEC and one of its first planet cracking vessels, the USG Ishimura had been hired by the Church of Unitology who praised the marker as mankind's next step in evolution as necremorph's in the universe. The system the ship travelled to was to Aegis Vll which was prohibited to enter by the primary form of government, EarthGov. All went well with cracking the planet until they uncovered a Red Marker, the artifact the church wanted. But soon chaos followed as the colonists that inhabited the planet went mad and many homicides and suicides began. The marker was taken to the ship before a necromorph infection started. We don't know how but the infection made it into the ship when no one committed homicide or suicides on the ship. Soon the ship was dead silent and a repair team was sent out to help when CEC lost communications with the Ishimura, they immediately and quietly sent a repair team to look into the SOS they received.

The team had 5 members, a technologist, a senior security officer with two other security officers, and the only surviving member was an engineer named Isaac Clarke. Isaac Clarke and two of his team members, Kendra Daniels and Zach Hammond sent out a distress signal on a meteorite which the EarthGov ship USM Valor. Their orders from there were to destroy all evidence of this illegal operation on the Ishimura and in the Aegis Vll system until they picked up and escape pod which was jettisoned into space earlier with a necromorph inside. The soldiers didn't stand a chance and were wiped out one by one but the message had gotten to EarthGov about the operation. Isaac had narrowly escaped the planet as the piece of the cracked planet came down and destroyed the planet along with the marker. The ship managed to survive as well with all the necromorphs just gone when EarthGov found the Ishimura and Isaac just floating in space. Isaac was immediately imprisoned on Titan Station for entering illegal space and was checked by the medical staff. They discovered the signs of dementia that was shown in marker patients decades ago. They put him away in the mental facility and went to take back the Ishimura to find all of the records of its mission and discover what they were there for. When they ported the Ishimura into the docking bay, trained professionals entered the ship and found pulsating globs of flesh-like material all over the ceiling, walls, and floors in the ship and no bodies but blood everywhere.

EarthGov did not want this news reaching the public so the organized a deal with the CEC that they would cover up this incident as long as they provided this project resources. The CEC agreed and continued it business eventually sending another key subject in this project, a man named Nolan Stross who caused an outbreak on the ship he was stationed on with a shard of a red marker. The cleanup crew on the Ishimura soon found the records for the mission and the director of the station, Hans Tiedemann, realized through several old documents that the markers were powerful objects with energy to sustain humanity as it is close to extinction still. With EarthGov's authorization, Tiedemann began a marker construction project as an attempt to save humanity. With this decision, hundreds of jobs arose and many more people flocked to Titan Station for work. They had numerous patients who all shared the same dementia which somehow allowed them to see how to construct a marker. Over the past 3 years, they have been slowly studying the patients and carefully building the marker in the order each patient sees it, especially patient 4 who Tiedemann believes is trouble since he was very crazy when they found him, it was Isaac Clarke. Now the marker is near completion.

The people you shall be reading about have certain roles in this project. A doctor named Heidi Latchford, an EarthGov security officer named John Willows, a patient named Cassidy Latchford, a miner named Robert Simmons, a young teenager named Jacob Smith, a pilot named Ellie Langford, a key patient named Nolan Stross and the director of the station Hans Tiedemann. Read their struggles and if they escape as the Sprawl falls.
