They weren’t laughing.
Wait... what?
“So this is for real?” I asked, eyebrows raised.
Zeus motioned around the luxury home. “Look where you at. You think this place was bought with burger-flippin’ money?”
I wanted to scream yes, but... nah. He wasn’t wrong.
“But when Dad said I’d be working with you,” I shot back, “I ain’t think he meant this. He’s the CFO of a pharmaceutical company, for cryin’ out loud.”
Zeus smirked. “And Batman at night.”
His boys started laughing, but I hit him with the most unamused face I had. He caught it quick and dropped the playfulness.
“Look,” he said, voice serious now. “Charles been in this shit since we were kids. He put me in charge once he got promoted. He sends us high clientele to move product to. He takes sixty percent, we split the rest.”
I had no words.
Drugs?
Selling?
Killing?
My mama would be rollin’ in her grave. Hell, Auntie Ellie would fall out if she knew I was even breathing in a room like this.
Zeus must’ve noticed the silence cause he leaned forward.
“Look, we’ll figure something out,” he said. “We need to focus on your training anyway.”
Training?
“Shooting. Combat. Stealth,” he said, counting off on his fingers. “Might even throw in some weight lifting. Build some muscle on you.”
Did this light bright bitch just call me fat?
He said it so casual like I was just a lil’ weak puppy or something. I folded my arms.
“When we start?” I asked, trying to keep my voice even.
“This weekend. That good with you?”
Like I got a fuckin’ choice?
“Sure,” I said flatly.
He narrowed his eyes like he was tryna figure out if I had attitude. (I did.) But he ain’t say nothin’, just turned back to the boys.
“So what’s the next assignment?” Mason asked.
“Dunno yet. He ain’t said. We’ll probably know by Friday,” Zeus replied, but he was still lookin’ at me like I was the mission.
“Till then, we chillin’. I’m still good off that last sale before I got locked up.”
They all nodded, cool as ever like we were talkin’ about stock trades or somethin’.
“You smoke, Ms. Ghenesis?” Nico asked, passing me the blunt.
I ain’t answer.
I just took it, brought it to my lips, inhaled slow, and let the smoke out through my nose like I’d done it a thousand times.
