We walked up to the house, and I swear my nerves were doing backflips. He unlocked the door and pushed it open, and as soon as we stepped inside—
Whew.
The smell of loud hit me like a wall. I coughed immediately, trying not to make it obvious, but damn.
He looked over his shoulder. “You good?”
“Yeah…” I wheezed softly. “Just wasn’t ready.”
We walked deeper into the house—open layout, all dark tones, sleek surfaces, LED lights glowing along the corners like it was part trap house, part tech lab.
In the living room, three dudes were lounged out, passing a blunt around like it was a relay baton. I recognized them from earlier at school—his crew.
“‘Bout time you showed up, slow ass,” one of them said, the one with a man bun, as he handed Zeus the blunt.
Zeus took it smooth and hit it once before replying, “My bad, I wasn’t tryna play Fast & Furious on the highway.”
Then he looked over at me.
“Plus, I got somebody with me.”
He nodded toward me, still holding smoke between his lips before exhaling it smooth. And that’s when it happened—
All three of them turned.
Three pairs of eyes on me like I was some pop-up twist in a movie they didn’t see coming.
They ain’t say anything at first. Just stared like they were processing.
I shifted on my feet, suddenly aware of every piece of my body, every flaw, every bit of me that didn’t quite fit the world they moved in.
“What’s with the looks?” I thought, trying not to let it show on my face.
Then one of them—light-skinned, gold chain swinging—spoke up. “Is it just me, or does she look like Artemis but lighter?”
Another one nudged him. “Shut up.”
I was still trying to figure out who the hell Artemis was when Zeus turned to me.
“My bad. What are your pronouns?”
His voice wasn’t loud, but it was firm—and direct. Like he wasn’t tryna let the moment turn weird.
“Oh… uh… I prefer she/her. But he/him is cool too,” I said, lowkey mumbling it.
He nodded once and looked back at his boys. “This is my brother—she goes by she—and she’s gonna be working with us.”
I blinked. Working?
I hadn’t even asked what that meant yet. But judging by the energy in this place... this wasn’t no 9-to-5.
He gestured toward the crew. “Ghen, these my bros—Nicolas, Mason, and Elijah. Folks just call him Dice.”
I gave a small nod, keeping my expression calm even though I was feeling everything but calm.
