Maria Sabishi—known as Mia—was far from your average teenage girl. In fact, she was anything but. Despite being cute, her face was often hidden under layers of dirt and bruises, a constant reminder of the life she led. And because people tend to act first and think later, rumors about her spread like wildfire, distorting the truth before anyone could see her for who she really was.

Mia's life had been anything but normal. Her mother died giving birth to her, and her father, unable or unwilling to raise her, abandoned her to start a new family, severing all ties. Her life had always been tragic. She was bullied relentlessly, not just for being alone but for the simple fact that she was an orphan.

For 16 years, Mia lived in an orphanage where no one wanted to be her friend. Every time someone tried to reach out, bad things seemed to follow. It was as if misfortune was bound to find those who dared to care about her.

Her first adoption attempt, at the age of 7, was a disaster. The woman who was supposed to be her new mother suffered a heart attack right before they were set to leave for their new home. In a panic, the father rushed her to the hospital, forgetting about Mia. On the way there, their car crashed, and both parents died.

At age 10, another family came for her. A father with two young children was set to adopt her, but disaster struck again. On his way to the orphanage, he received a call from his children, informing him that their house was on fire. He rushed back, but by the time the firefighters arrived, it was too late—his family had perished in the flames. Mia's adoption was once again canceled.

This pattern of bad luck followed her wherever she went. No one seemed able to adopt her, and she was left at the orphanage until she turned 16. But just when she thought her life couldn't get worse, the universe threw another cruel twist her way.

The day before she was set to leave the orphanage, a massive earthquake (magnitude 9.5) struck while Mia was out running an errand. It lasted 15 seconds, long enough for her to take cover and stay calm. When the tremors subsided, she made her way back to the orphanage, only to find the entire building had collapsed, killing everyone inside. Mia was once again left alone, homeless, and without any place to turn.

Thus began the story of Mia's life.
