Shellington's theory (is there a word for a theory that has no scientific basis?) is that the dragon is so cold it warms her, Andy's theory is that the same magic that converts the dragon's hatred for, well, everything into cold is reacting the same way to her intense hope. Except it's "keeping aliveness" (his words) instead of cold.
Yes, Melody is alive afterwards, but extremely scatterbrained for about a day.
