Growing up my least favorite Disney fairytale had been the Little Mermaid. At the young age of sixteen she decided to give up being magical for a guy. She gave away her tale and from then on she had always felt missplaced. If it were a good fairytale she would have been able to have both. Looking back, her desion was based on love. But through the duration of the movie she had never questioned what she would be losing, her family, her friends, her idenity, she was biased and because of that she made an extremley rash choice that in the end changed her whole life forever. My sexuality is what defines me but in that moment in time I, Carter Stevens was not ready to give up my magic.
If I were to tell my family or even my friends, what could happen is completely unknown to me. Brian is completely oblivion to the fact that I would be losing my tale. I will not choose to be blinded by love and loose everything that I worked so hard to build.
My phone had rung. The ringtone the theme to Halloween. " Hey babe." I answered.
" Hey Carter," I was repulsed by the sound of her voice, " A bunch of us are heading over to Hedy's ice cream shop and I would love to have you join us." Her voice high pitched and strong. Such a catch, every guy dreams of having her at their arm.
" Yeah Em, I will pick you up in ten." My voice dragged.
" Is something wrong? Did you have a bad day?"
" Sort of. I dont want to talk about it. Be there in ten, be outside." I hung up the phone and starred at my reflection in the mirror, dissplaced by the person looking back at me.
I got into my 1969 black classic camaro and zoomed down the street to her house. She met me outside on her porch, her smile brightening her flawless porcelain white face. She kissed me, her lips lingering on mine. She grabbed my hand and opened my door like she has done many times before, like a failed atempt at a joke. Like I did everytime, I smiled and got in.
When we arrived at the ice cream parlor I was greeted by the whole football team. " Carter, whats good?" Kyle the wide reciever on the team said leaning in for a bro hug. He smelt like cologn, his sent widening my eyes.
" Nothin man. Hows the single life treatin you." I responded.
" I'll spare you the details." He said through a laugh reminding me of Brians.
I made my rounds and said hello to each and every teammate of mine.
" Being captain of the football team has its advantages huh?" Emily said with a big smile highlighting her bright hazel eyes.
" You got that right." I said laying a kiss upon her face, showcasing her to the team.
We walked up to the counter to be greated by Brian. His perfect hair stuck under a Hedy's Creamery visor. " Hello, what can I get you?" He said in a cold tone of voice.
" Ummmmm can I get one cookie dough and whatever my boyfriend wants," Emily said kissing me again.
" I will have a mint choclate chip cone." I said starring into Brians broken depressed eyes. I had forgoten he worked there.
We headed back to the table where the team had been sitting. " Carter you better wash that cone before eating it." Joe center offense started.
" Why?" I said observing the cone in my hands.
" The fag at the counter served it to you, you might catch an S.T.D. or something." Joe said through an obnoxious laugh.
I flinched at those words. I looked back at the counter where Brian had been starring back at me. His eyes filled with heartache and anger. I knew he must of heard Joe's comment and my lack of response. His eyes lingered in mine for a while and then he stormed off into the apployes room. I looked back at the floor and held back my tears, like I had done may times before.
Even a fairytale has its sad moments. At the stroke of twelve midnight Cinderella had to lose her dress, her shoes, her beauty. And in two seconds her night was over leaving her where she had been before. One step foward and Two steps back.
