Noboru and Gao (1)

--Chapter 1--

"I'm back... Japan..." I thought as the plane lowered itself onto the runway and skid to a stop. My body moved along with the motions of the plane as it stalled for a halt. Finally, it did and I sighed from relief. I was both senses of anxious. Eagered because I wanted to meet my biggest rival, and nervous because I didn't know how to react to seeing him again. It had been some time. I haven't seen my rival since the ABC Cup.

  We left the airport and my parents called for a cab. We already had a place to stay at so we were heading there. Upon arriving there, they started unpacking. But I was too excited to just mildly stand by and unpack. "Mom, Dad. I'm going to Castle," I told them. My parents looked at me with a raised eyebrow until they finally get what I was hinting at and nodded in approval.
  "Be back before dark," they told me. I accepted their terms and headed out right away, sprinting. I check my phone to see what time it was. It was a little past three o'clock so school should be out. Seeing that, I pushed my pace to be a bit faster. I didn't noticed myself grinning until El Quixote spoke up from my Buddyfight deck.
  "Excited, my boy? Did you miss him that much?"
  I nodded in response of his question. "I'm going to show Gao how much I've grown as a Buddyfighter... and finally win against him!"
  El Quixote gave a chuckle. "Now you're getting me excited, too."
  It wasn't long before I finally reached Castle. Castle is a shopping district, but hence the name there is a castle stadium in the middle of it. It's where Buddyfighters get to battle there and show off their stuff. Not to mention there's a Buddyfight card shop nearby so you could always buy new cards whenever you want. Gao loves Buddyfight so I bet a million that he would be there now and...
  "Gargantuan Punisher!"
  I paused at hearing that voice. "It's Gao!" I told myself and ran to where his voice came from. I was right. There Gao was. He just finished someone off with his Impact card, Gargantuan Punisher, whose former owner was Tasuku Ryuenji. I clenched my fists at remembering how Gao beat the Boy Wonder and got his attention. I wished I could have beaten Tasuku myself so that I could be noticed as a formidable opponent!
  I snapped back to the present as I saw the elevator opened up and Gao stepped out with his Buddy monster, Drum. His friends, Baku, Kuguru, and Kiri walked up to him with a smile, likely congratulating him. I was about to walk up to Gao, too. But hesitated. I don't know why. Maybe I should make a grand entrance with myself. Although, it would be pretty embarrassing if it wasn't grand at all and they don't react much on seeing me. "Wait. Does Gao even miss me...?" I thought to myself. "Do I actually expect he would be surprised to see me?" Pondering about how Gao would react to me visiting Japan slowed me down on my surroundings. So it took some time before I actually heard him calling my name.
  "Hey, Noboru! Is that you? Oh man, I missed ya!" I flinched from Gao's shouting and stepped back a little. He and his friends were running my way and I tried playing it cool.
  Crossing my arms and putting a smirk on my face, I replied, "It's me, all right. Hope you didn't lose before seeing me again."
  Gao clenched a fist in front of him while grinning back at me. "Heh, don't worry about that."
  Drum stepped forward, beating his claw to his chest. "We haven't gone down yet!" he boasted.
  "Gao has been doing pretty good, bro," Baku reassured me.
  "In fact, he has gotten better since the ABC Cup," Kuguru informed.
  "So awesome!" Kiri commented.
  Getting a little ticked off by their praising of Gao, I waved a hand dismissively at them. "I get it, I get it. But I also have gotten better since the ABC Cup." Then I pointed my index finger at Gao. Since we were so close already, my finger almost touched his nose. "Let's see how far we both got with a Buddyfight."

I was hit by his Gargantuan Punisher and my Dragon World flag was destroyed. I felt bad for losing, but also great because the match was a good one. I gave a small sigh, my hands to me knees, before standing upright and smiling proudly. "That was fun," I thought. "Oh well, I almost got him. Maybe next time..." The platform lowered me down until I was out of the stadium and into the elevator. Then, I departed from it. Gao ran up to me with a grin on his face. "Man, Noboru, that was awesome! When did you learn all of that?" he questioned and raised his hand for a high-five.
  "In America, of course," I answered and returned his high-five. "I didn't show you everything, though, so expect a rematch." I grinned back in promise.
  Gao's friends stepped up behind him and started to compliment me on my seemingly new and improved way of fighting. After exchanging a few more words, I decided to leave. But when I was about to, Gao must have noticed and stopped me by calling out, "Hey, let's celebrate your visit with a little party at my house."
  "Aw yeah, food time! All of that Buddyfighting got my stomach growling." And just on cue, Drum's stomach sounded. Everyone laughed from the right timing of it.
  "As much as I want to eat your Grandmother's recipes, I don't think I can go," Baku spoke up. "I have something I need to do."
  "That's surprising. Every time there's a chance for you to scarf down food you'd take it," Drum said.
  I heard Kuguru giggling almost nervously as I turned to look at her. "Oh, looks like someone actually remembered," she said, covering her mouth from another giggle.
  Baku stared at her before looking away and scratching the back of his neck in what seemed like embarrassment. "What? Don't tell me you forgot...?" He said the last part too quietly that I almost didn't hear.
  "Oh, Baku," Kuguru chirped and latched onto his free arm. "I was deciding that if you forget, I wouldn't remind you, and we wouldn't do it."
  "What are you guys talking about?" Gao asked. I had the exact same question in my mind. I didn't get what was going on with the two, but it felt awkward for the rest of us to be there to hear it happen.
  Baku shook his head. "I-it's nothing, bro. Point is, we can't go to your party." He turned to face me and lowered his head in apology before quickly bringing it back up to look me in the eyes. "I would like to eat in your favor, but we're gonna have to skip this one out." He started speed walking away with Kuguru in tow. "Well, see ya!" The next thing I knew, they were lost within the crowd of traversing people.
  "Okay..." Gao commented and crossed his arms. "That was kinda weird. Oh well." He turned to face his remaining party members. "You guys ready to eat?" Kiri and Drum cheered and I shrugged in a matter-of-fact way.
