One week to competition
My ice skate slid out from under me and I fell hard on the ice. Cursing under my breath, I got back up again. I heard my trainer call out to me from across the ice.
"One more time, Jenn, I know you can make it!" My trainer, Ms. Dewolfe, had always believed in me. From the moment I had become a skater up until this current moment. I, Jenn Tatiana, love my personal trainer, the woman was like a second mother to me.
I brushed the ice shavings off my leggings. If I didn't get this jump down by next week, I was screwed. I went through the movements again, taking great care not to misplace a step. In one swift movement, I stuck her toepick into the ice and leaped through the air, spinning with the right precision I needed. The landing, though, was a different story altogether.
I watched as I came down, placing my foot just right, or so I thought. As soon as my foot hit the ice, everything in my body went slack. My ankle felt like jelly, my knees wobbled like jello in an earthquake, and I collapsed on the ice right then and there, my golden hair spreading as I laid on the ice.
My trainer quickly skated over to me, helping me up.
"Well, that was," the lady paused, searching for the right word, "interesting."
I rubbed my lower back, sore from the rough landing I just had.
"Tell me about it, Ms. Dewolfe, another landing like that and I'll be out for the next week!" I half-laughed at my own comment. Imagine! Me having to quit competition because of a silly landing! That won't get me anywhere in my dream of being an Olympic Ice Skater. "Ms. Dewolfe, I'm going to try one more time before I take a break, ok?"
Ms. Dewolfe nodded and skated away, allowing me some time for my jump to take place.
I flawlessly went through the spins and twirls, the figure eights and small jumps, and finally the big leap to top it off and as a finale to the beginning of my dance sequence. I took a deep breath as my toepick dug into the ice. Suddenly I was in the air, spinning. Finally, I prepared myself for another hard fall, but I didn't fall. I was still on my feet and I could hear Ms. Dewolfe cheering me on getting the great jump down.
"Woo! Go, Jenn! I knew you would make it!" Ms. Dewolfe kept clapping.
I curtsied on the ice in a joking manner saying, "Thank you, oh, thank you very much. You were a wonderful audience!" Finally skating towards the gate to exit the rink and take a break from my practice.
"You're doing great, Jenn, you just need to practice that one jump. Other than that you have got it all down, you got that?"
"Yes, Ms. Dewolfe, I get it. I know that's the one thing that is always getting me. If I want to place first in this competition I'm going to have to try harder, I understand that." I swapped out my ice skates for my tennis shoes. "I had better be heading home now, bye Ms. Dewolfe!" I waved my goodbyes to my trainer while running out the door.
As I was exiting the building I ran into a boy not too much taller than I was, knocking both of us to the ground.
"Oh, I'm so sorry, sir!" I cried out as soon as I got over my short-lasting shock. The boy had dark hair, and beautiful dark eyes, I noticed, as I watched him take in what just happened.
"oh no sto bene, I'm ok ma'am! It is you I am worried about! The apologies should be mine!" The thin boy offered me a hand as soon as he got up himself. He had a strange accent, sounding a lot like Italian.
"Oh, I'm fine," I said taking his hand, "I'm used to falling at this point." The boy helped me up onto my feet.
A deep male voice called out to the boy "Amadeo! We must be going or we'll be late for your practice!" The boy sighed deeply. He waved to me goodbye as he jogged into the building.
"Goodbye, miss! I hope to see you around!" With that last sentence, I turned around walking back to my house.
Who was that boy? He looked around her age, yet I had never seen him before. He was probably from somewhere far away, in Vancouver for the international competition, most likely. That gave me hope that I would see him again. He seemed like a mostly quiet, kind, gentle fellow. What was his name... Amadeo, was it? What a nice name, I decided.
"Well, 'Amadeo', I'll have to run into you again," I laughed to myself as I walked down the street towards my home. As soon as I reached my front steps I opened the small house and flicked the lights on. Someone is here, I know it. My instincts told me to run from my home, but it was getting late and I was tired. I ignored all the red flags being set off in my body until I flopped down on my couch and closed my eyes. That's when I heard the familiar voice.
"Hello, Jenn."
