"I can't even," she murmured.
I walked out of the changing room, giving the pale pink dress a twirl. "What's up?" I inquired. My best friend, Jessica, was sitting on a bench just outside the rooms, scrolling through her phone.
"We literally broke up just yesterday. Look," she said, turning her phone to face me.
Her boyfriend- I mean, EX-boyfriend, had posted a picture of him kissing another girl.
I laughed. "Told you."
She scoffed, looking up from her phone. "What did you 'tell me'?"
"I knew he wasn't good enough for you. I told you I was suspicious the week after you guys started dating!" I returned to the changing room, shutting the door. "I'm not going to get this dress. It's just not my fav color."
"I mean, still. He shouldn't just go around kissing random girls all the time, you know?"
"Well, duh. I bet he cheated on you."
I heard Jessica laugh. "You are really good at cheering people up after a break-up," she said sarcastically.
I blushed. "Sorry."
"..."
"I bet he did though," I whispered.
"I can't help but agree," she replied as I walked out of the changing room again.
"Oooooh!" She said in response to the teal skater dress I was wearing. "I actually like that one."
"Oh, shut up," I laughed, hitting her playfully and returning to the changing room. "Hey, are you trying anything on?"
"Nah, don't really feel like it today."
I sensed a bit of sadness in her tone. On the outside, she was tough, but I knew inside she was hurting really badly. I knew that she had really liked David, and after three years of dating, he dumped her over text.
The little bitch.
Honestly, I was glad they broke up. First of all, he didn't deserve her, and second, I wouldn't have to be the third wheel again. What can I say? It made me feel lonely.
Two hours later I was in my apartment, holding three bags of clothes. Jessica followed behind me, carrying two more bags. We dumped the bags on my bed, which I just left there because I was lazy and didn't feel like hanging them up. What can I say?
"Hey, do you want to stay a little while longer? I got some movies and ice cream! Ice cream's always nice after a breakup!" I pleaded.
"How would you know? You've never even been in a relationship." Jessica smirked.
I scowled. "I read it in books."
"Books? Who reads books?" She laughed. "And you wonder why you're still single."
I rolled my eyes, plopping down on the couch. "So, Spider-Man or Captain America?"
"Hey, I never said I was staying," she paused. "But Spider-Man, obviously."
I grinned, and she sat down next to me, hugging a carton of chocolate ice cream, holding a spoon in her mouth. I looked over at her.
"Hey, where's my spoon?"
~One Day Later
Jen, can you come meet me at the park? We need to talk. Urgent.
I stared at the text from Jessica. She never sent me texts like this. Not even when she and David broke up. When they broke up, she only said:
Um, David kinda just broke up with me over text...
It was like she didn't even care about it that much. Which is why I didn't waste any time getting to the park.
It was 8:00 pm, so it was already dark. I ran across the grass towards the bench where Jessica's figure was. Her long black hair fell neatly over her shoulders, resting on the back of her jean jacket. I could tell she was anxious, she wouldn't cease tapping her foot.
"What's wrong?" I breathed heavily, stopping next to the bench to catch my breath.
She looked at me, tears rolling down her face. Her eyes were puffy and red.
I stared at her, my heart beating fast. "Jessica, honey, should I sit?"
She nodded, gulping. She looked down at her hands and whispered, "Hide me. Get me out of here. They will find me."
I shook my head, confused. "Jessica, I don't understand. What happened?"
She glanced at me. "I did something bad. Please, don't tell anyone. Can you hide me in your apartment or something?"
I nodded. "What did you do?"
She shook her head, sobbing.
"Okay, okay. Let's get you home now. What about your parents?"
"They won't be a problem."
"OH MY GOD, JESSICA!"
She shook her head again, tears never stopping. "No, no, you don't understand. Please don't ask any questions, I need to get out of here."
I stared at her. I didn't know what to do. I guess the only thing I could at the moment was get her to my apartment. I trusted her enough, and I knew she would tell me what had happened, at least one day. I helped her up off the bench, grasping her hand and leading her away.
"Let's go."
