Pain, loss, chaos and destruction. The life of Barnabas and his brother Henry started in the year 1917, when the Romanov family was assassinated by their Royal Occult Adviser, Grigori Rasputin.
The soldiers had used the hilts of their guns as battering rams against the front gate, CLANK the gate sounded off once. After some resting from the soldiers the sound came again CLANK.
As the soilders battered the gate the Palace Guards ran to it in order to fend off the intruders. However as all this went down Tzar Nicholas II and his beloved wife watched in horror as their Guards were shot dead and the soldiers came ever closer to breaking in. Recognizing their need to act quickly the couple raced to their youngest daughter's room, hoping there were no soldiers nearby. In their fear Nickolas and his wife Anelxandra had planned to save their daughter, Anastasia Romanov, from assassination and to prevent the revolution from ever happening. Their plan was to use one of Rasputin's books to send their daughter and their unborn grandchildren back in time 13 months and 22 days prior to the revolution's conception.
Agreeing to her parent's plan Anastasia ran with her mother and father through the magnificent gold-lined hallways of the palace. The dark December light reflected a dark dim light, almost like death, in the many windows. Soon, they ran out into the main courtyard. The trees were dead and bare. The snow was a deep shade of gray and the sky was an endless black. The wind was cold, dead, and silent.
As they ran past a great pine tree, a revolutionary soldier jumped out and shot Alexandra in the leg to slow her down. Her foot drug behind her, as she tried to catch herself. As she lurched forward, she was shot a second time in the back. As she fell, a third bullet grazed the back of her skull before the fourth bullet exploded in the back of her head, leaving part of her brain visible and exposed. As she wept and tried to utter her final words she was at a loss for breath and couldn't utter a word, she very shortly joined the other dozens of bullet-ridden corpses lying dead in the blood stained snow that had slowly (but quickly) filled the palace courtyard.
As Anastasia and her father ugly cried in their grief and had successfully fended off the soldier the pair quickly came to the slow realization that there were now only four Romanovs: Anastasia, her father, and Anastasia's two unborn children. The pair then continued to fly down the path that led to the broken down batted gate where visitors would normally enter AND where the soldiers' main forces had broken in. Nickolas then turned toward a rose bush and signaled for his daughter to follow. Nikolai then gave the bush a shove revealing a metal trap door with words that read, "Смерть приносит болезнь. Болезнь приносит коррупцию, коррупция приносит хаос. Хаос приносит разрушение. Разрушение приносит смерть."
After hours of prying at the hatch Nikolai eventually had successfully opened the hatch door, and (despite her fear and skepticism) the two climbed down a metal ladder into a sewer-like tunnel. It smelled of sewage and rat feces. Nikolai closed the hatch behind them, as they had the fear of being followed. Anastasia and her father sprinted down the old stone tunnel and came to an unkempt room dimly lit with torches. The room was filled with stacks of books, various potions, old yellowed burnt down candles, yellowed and decaying letters, old journals, and above else a pentagram surrounded by burnt down candles and ripped pages that said, "Maledictione Mortem." and another that read, "Ut Animus Control."
Ignoring the strange symbols and papers on the walls and floor Nikolai began madly rummaging through the piles of books while Anastasia knelt praying to god for this madness to end. Once her father had found what he was looking for Anastasia's trance of prayer was suddenly halted and as she stood up and turned to her father she would behold a large black leather book with blood red cursive on the cover entitled, "Incantations of Time and Place."
Nikolai then placed the book on a nearby table and drew a strange symbol around his daughter and then proceeded to open the book to a page entitled "Present to past." He read through the faded black words on the thin, flesh colored page. Nikolai then took two locks of Anastasia's blonde hair, doused it in one of the potions and said, "This is for me to send you back in time." Then he put the other lock of her hair into his pocket. Nikolai began to recite the Latin chant from the book. "Sacrificium mi nimirum essetia est est maius subiectum virtutis. Mitti illam" Suddenly the dust from the old book began to get to Anastasia's father and although he tried to hold back a sneeze and continue on with the spell successfully saying, "Thirteen." Shortly after he couldn't hold it back any longer, sneezing and coughing over the words, only able to fully spit out the number, "twenty two." Then as he finished speaking the spell a smokey moss-green mist emerged from the book and began encircling Anastasia. Before the mist fully engulfed Anastasia, she yelled, "Wait what about my other lock of hair?"
Before her father could answer, Rasputin appeared out of nowhere and stabbed Nikolai through the back. As Nikolai fell to the ground, his head banging into the table and the book on the way down, he coughed as he tried to speak. He finally whispered in a raspy voice, "This lock is for me to take to my grave." Anastasia then screamed and began to cry as she watched her last living relative die before her eyes. Recognizing his vendetta against the Romanovs wasn't yet finished Rasputin raced to her, knife raised. She vanished before he could get to her. His knife plunged into empty air.
