It is terrifying how the death of people can materialise in a single, silent moment, unnoticed by the rest of the world .
I sat cuddled up on my favourite chair with blankets wrapped around my shivering body. The morning passed by as I slipped in and out of consciousness,in that time my family were able to disappear out of existence.
I could no longer sleep. I pulled my shivering hand out of my warm fort of blankets and picked up the cold laptop from the glass coffee table . I turned on my laptop and logged in . I clicked on the google icon so I could watch Netflix . The first thing that popped up on the screen was 'the famous Cole cooper -C.E.O of the cooper design corporation-has perished in a deadly car crash . Confused,I nipped myself trying to wake myself from what I thought was a horrible dream . It can not be serious .Maybe there is a different Cole Cooper who was a complete stranger and not my father?
Everyone has that one sudden life changing moment. That moment shapes who you are as a person and pushes you down the path that leads you to the rest of your life. It defines you. Sometimes you can see the moment coming from miles away . But , most of the time it happens unexpectedly in a split-second . This is how it happened with me,my whole family gone in a split second .A quick flash and my life was completely derailed.
I clicked on the article and red it ,the article went onto explain that everyone in the car was dead. However , one daughter hadn't been present, and her whereabouts was unknown. That was me ,wasn't it ? I stared at the laptop screen in disbelief and utter shock horror ,having a hard time comprehending anything I was reading .There was a mug of hot chocolate sitting on the glass coffee table that my mother had made before they had left. I thought I thought she can't be dead .She had swirled the melting marshmallows in only a few hours ago.My head felt dizzy and I felt like I was going to faint.
I scrolled further down the article and I spotted a picture from the wreckage ,my stomach flipped.I could hardly recognise it,the car had smashed it into the lamppost so hard that the car bonnet had curved round the tilted post. But ,I knew the deep blue of my mother's mini. That car was her's and my family had been in it !
My stomach reacted before I was able to process anything.I bent over the side of the chair and emptied my body of what little amount of hot chocolate I had been able to sip onto the soft, creme carpet . How could my loving mother ,the woman who only just last night held my hair back out of my face as I cried into the toilet suffering from the flu,be gone? What about Anastasia ,my other half?Is it even possible for one twin to live while the other one is dead? **** It was later that night that soft knocks of the police officers banged on my apartment door.I hadn't moved from the warm spot of the chair. The laptop was on the glass coffee table with the bright screen blaring up at my face; All day I had been reading over the title"Cole Cooper dead after car crash ".The words blurred through out the day when the shock took control of my body . At some point I slipped into a dreamlike state ,unable to feel anything except the severe numbness of my limbs .There was more puke on the floor,I hadn't been able to cry because it didn't feel real. The officers brought a man with them and he slowly entered the apartment .His eyes were pink and puffy from crying,I had never seen a man be so emotional before ,his voice was the first thing I have been able to understand since I read the article.
"Hi Saffron " he said ,crouching down next to me,"I'm Grayson Quinn".His medium dark brown hair was plastered to his forehead .That name sounded vaguely familiar ,I looked up into his deep hazel eyes .He didn't look like anyone I had met before ,but something about his name was familiar. Grayson Quinn. Wait hadn't I heard that name just this morning? Was the man standing in front of me ,my father long best friend? The Grayson who had attended Fort lockdown boarding school, the place where my sister and I went with my mother all those years ago?
It was then and there that reality came crashing hard down on me .Grayson Quinn was who my family were driving to the airport to meet this morning when they crashed into the lamppost .he had flown in from Colorado to visit my father for a few days.
My family was dead and this man was living proof .I could see the pain and hurt in his voice. My father obviously meant a lot to him.I started to chock as I tried to breath in a large amount of air ,I felt sharp pains in my chest and stomach. Finally, tears started uncontrollably rolling down my pink cheeks .
"shush sweetheart "said Grayson ,stroking my light brown hair as I bawled on my knees ."Its going to be okay,I'am going to take care of you ".
So I began my journey away from the gorgeous city that I loved.Away from the cement walls and floors that kept me captivated .Far away from all they flashing neon ,the busy streets and the load traffic that lulled me to sleep every night.Away from the expensive shops, colourful Broadway shows, the restaurants that severed food from every cuisine that you could imagine, that bong of Big Ben.And far away from London ,the city I have grown up in and made so many childhood memories and held my heart in.
I was heading to Colorado a place I don't know to live on a ranch with fourteen boys.
