Charlotte Mason liked to believe she was good at a lot of things, track, school, baseball. But when it came to boys, Charlotte was useless. She just didn't understand the appeal to them. Of course, with grad coming up, most girls Charlotte's age were running around like a chicken with its head cut off, looking for a prom date. Charlotte, however, didn't care. The only time she's ever felt feelings for a guy was Harry Carington. Charlotte's feelings towards Harry are more admiration than romantic but since he's the only boy she's ever felt this way about, Charlotte just assumed it was a crush.

So that being said, Charlotte had never really thought about having a date to grad, until now.

"Honestly Charlotte if you want a date to the prom you have to at least try." Charlotte's Mom sat glaring at her sweatpants from across the table.  "Why don't you go put on that nice skirt I bought for you the other day."

Charlotte took another bite of her bagel. "It's uncomfortable. I also don't enjoy having to tug it down all the time. On top of all that why would I want a date to prom, I don't think I'll be going." Charlotte's Dad walked into the room bleary eyed and messy haired.

"You don't need a date to prom honey, but you should go. You can hang out with the team." He picked up Charlotte's bagel and took a chunk out of it. "Prom is one of the most important nights of your life you shouldn't not go because some guys were too stupid to ask you."

In all honesty Charlotte wasn't insecure about her looks at all. She had more of her Mom's dark complexion than her Dad's pale one. She got her Mom's curly hair and her Dad's green eyes. She was tall and skinny with muscles on her legs from track. Charlotte knew that her looks weren't why she couldn't get a boyfriend. It was her masculinity that chased them away. Not that Charlotte complained about that. She preferred being friends with the guys at her school, dating them was something completely out of her comfort zone.

"That's not why I wouldn't want to go." Charlotte sighed. Charlotte didn't really understand why she was too afraid to go but she had a suspicion it had to do with the other girls there. Maybe she was intimidated by them?

"Well that's beside the point. It's up to you honey but I really think you should enjoy yourself and go." Her Father poured himself a cup of coffee and sat down. "Now me and your Mother have another issue we would like to talk to you about."

Charlotte swallowed the last of her bagel. "Make it quick I want to get to school early today, one more late slip and it's a detention."

Charlottes Mother gave her a dry smile. "Honey, you are going to be sleeping on the couch for a while, my brothers coming to town."

This confused Charlotte greatly, her Mom was an only child. She had two Aunts from her dad's side but both were unmarried and lived across the world. "You don't have a brother." Charlotte said carefully.

The room grew into an uncomfortable silence. "Actually sweetie, I do. He left home when I was ten and he was sixteen."

"Why?" Charlotte practically didn't give her mother time to finish her sentence. It wasn't everyday a new uncle popped up with a mysterious past.

"Well.." her Mother started but it seemed as though she was stuck on how to continue her sentence. "He chose a certain life style that Nana and Pops weren't OK with."

Charlotte smirked. "Weed? Cocain? Heroine?" Charlotte had assumed drugs would be the main reason. Her Nana and Pops were strict but nice. They wouldn't kick out someone for no reason.

"No honey, he um.. brought home his boyfriend, Drew." Again the table grew into an uncomfortable silence. Charlotte knew how heavily religious her Grandparents were. They had ignored her Mother for weeks when they found out she was pregnant with Charlotte even though she hadn't been married to Charlottes father yet. Eventually they forgave her mom. Apparently this mysterious Uncle wasn't so lucky.

"Oh." Charlotte suddenly felt like her bagel was coming back up.  "When is he coming?"

"Today while your at school, that's why your father is taking the day off of work. I would but... we're packed." Suddenly Charlottes father shifted as if just realizing he was apart of this conversation

Charlotte felt resentment grow in her stomach. Her Uncle had been kicked out of his house at age sixteen, one year younger than Charlotte was now. Just because he chose to love someone of the same gender. Now her Mom wouldn't even be there to welcome him back. "I have to head to school."

Charlotte swung her backpack over her shoulder and gave her dad a kiss on the cheek. "Cha-" he started but she was out the door before he finished.

Sometimes Charlotte ran to school. But those were on days she thought she hadn't gotten enough practice in for track. She always planned ahead on those days wearing proper workout clothes. The school was only two streets down but on a hot day it was draining.

Charlotte was wearing jeans and a tucked in shirt from her dream university, orange county. These clothes were definitely not running atire but before Charlotte knew it she was sprinting to school.
