3. I'm Creating My Own Map

Start from the beginning

The bell rings; swiping up my phone, I head into the very crowded hallway, walking in the direction of my locker. My heart skips a beat when I feel someone wrap their hand around my wrist, fear shoots through my chest.

I'm spun around and come face to face with a worried looking Chance, I just brush it off, calming myself down slowly. My breathing going back to natural now.

"Sorry I startled you." He says softly, releasing my wrist from his hold. I run a shaky hand through my hair, counting to ten inside my head to help slow my racing heart.

6…7…8…9…10

"I-Its fine, sorry." My voice comes out just a notch above a whisper, causing me to scowl. I tighten my grip on my bag, and try not to get hit by the students.

Chance must have seen my difficulties because he pulls me in front of him, his hands placed softly on my shoulders, "Never apologize for that." He whispers into my ear, when we finally reach outside he turns to me, "Did you walk?" He questions. I ran out of gas money so I was stuck with walking.

He leads us to a red 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 Convertible. I look at it and raise an eyebrow, he rolls his eyes, pressing the unlock button. He then moves forward, opening the door open for me.

The drive to Chance's home wasn't long, then again he was going 50 above the speed limit. Yeah, he's a rebel, I told him. He opens the door for me again and I mutter a thank you; gazing up at the white mansion. It was beautiful. I follow him up the porch and through the front door. After kicking off our shoes he moves toward the kitchen.

The man and woman who were at the diner stand by the island. The woman has short brown hair and green eyes, there's a massive resemblance between her and Chance; so I assume its his mother. The guy on the other hand has short brown hair and blue eyes, sharing no resemblance to Chance.

"I'm Caroline." The woman beams, smiling the same charming smile Chance uses. I instantly like her, she seems okay. She's not one of those snotty rich people.

Sawyer, stop liking people. Their just going to get hurt.

I look over at the guy, "Rick." He says with a mock salute, okay so he's a talker. I stay beside Chance, our arms bumping into each others. I feel my phone buzz and see that I had set a reminder to get the kids from school.

I slap a hand to my forehead, "I-I forgot the k-kids." I say more to myself, but everyone turns and looks at me in concern. God I'm so stupid, this is what people tell me. I' never be smart, I always forget, I'm useless.

"You have kids?" Caroline exclaims softly, my cheeks heat, I'm hopeless. I watch Rick shoot Caroline a deadpanned look, but she doesn't seem to see it, or she ignored it.

"N-no, my, uh, s-siblings?" It comes out as a question, but they don't seem to notice. Thank god, I've already made a huge fool out of myself.

Caroline smiles kindly, picking up her sleek cell phone from the counter, "What's their names?" She asks, the whole time; Chance stands there, dumbfounded.

"Britain Mitchell and Meryl Greene." I recite, I listen to her say their names into the phone, to whoever is on the other end. I feel Chance's curious eyes burning holes in the side of my head. He's probably wondering why my 'siblings' have to different last names than me.

Caroline sets down the phone, Chance mumbles something before leaving the room. "Their great kids, I've met them a few times." Caroline begins, but I know she has more to say.

"But aren't they from that foster home, Linda's foster home?" Caroline adds on, her tone smooth, it doesn't go sour like most peoples do when talking about foster homes.

"I, uhh, umm." I trail off stupidly, I watch her eyes widen a fraction, Ricks neutral facial expression turns soft. I stand here, my heart speeding and my hands trembling at my sides. Nobody but Frankie knows about the foster home.

"You're in the foster home," Caroline starts, her eyes searching my face, she squints a bit and reaches over, brushing the hair out of my face. I cringe back, frightened, she sends me an apologetic look before adding, "I heard Linda was a bitch." She snarls, eyes blazing.

Rick rubs his hand in her back, trying to calm her down; I don't understand why she's mad, nobody cares about me or the other kids. Rick smiles at me warmly and the warm feeling comes back, replacing the numb.

I'm creating my own map, I've always been in control. But this - this feeling, I have no control over it and its scaring me.

I look at then, eyes pleading, "Please don't tell him." I beg, my eyes wide from the possibility. Rick moves away from Caroline and places a reassuring hand on my shoulder.

"Its our little secret." He whispers, giving my shoulder a small squeeze before moving back to Caroline.

Our little secret.
