As the cold winter air blew through the cracks of Camillas family home, she sat there with her favourite book, the one her grandmother gave her when she was 10 years old. "The lies" a made up story no doubt, but it had a good progression line. Camilla, who was very deep into her book once more, did not even hear the front door open and then close with a click.
"How many times does dad have to tell you, turn ON the fireplace when the wind gets bad outside". Camilla jumped with surprise at the unannounced voice, she looked up towards the window where the voice came from.
"Earth to Camilla, jeez sometimes I think your just as deaf as grandpa used to be" Camilla squinted at the figure while her eyes adjusted. When her eyes got used to the white snowy backdrop she was finally able to make out the person. Her big brother Jacob.
"Jezz you so into that book you can't even speak?" Camilla shook her head to clear her thoughts "Ha sorry JJ, wasnt expecting you home so soon. How was the trip?" Jacob walked into the open plan kitchen and opened their run down fridge which looked like it had been through a war and back. "Eh, it was alright. California was nice and all but it sure doesn't beat home."
Camilla and Jacob have lived in Ontario B.C since they were born, except they used to live a lot nicer with their mother, who sadly passed away 2 years ago in a car accident. Now they live with their father who is always away on business trips, even though he refuses to tell them what buissness; he always just says, "I'll tell you two one day, but I'm busy right now." He was always to busy, to busy to see Camilla graduate last week, to busy to go to their mothers funeral; the only thing he acually did was pay for the house and all the electricity and water. Their father was always one to keep to him self, even when they were born he didn't play with them much or look after them but since their mother died he has been extra distant.
"So when is your next trip?" Camilla stood at the fridge door looking over at her elder brother who couldn't quite decide between leftovers or an apple. "I dont know, they said they would call me next time instead of pulling me out of College" Jacob stood with the lucky picked apple and took a huge bit after giving Camilla a huge dorky smile, and then walked to sit at the table and look through the mail. "I was thinking, Jacob. Maybe next time you go on one of these big trips I could come with you? Dad isnt gonna be back for 7 months yet, and I've already talked to him and he said that would be fine. So what do yo-" Camilla was interrupted by her brother reaching across the table to cover her mouth, but he didn't look mad, he wasnt even looking at her, he was looking around the room, listening. Camilla slowly pushed his hand down. "Jacob? Whats-"
"Shh... someone is here, outside. Follow me." Camilla and Jacob tiptoed down the basement, avoiding the creaking floor spots that they memorized. As they both got to the bottom of the basement stairs Jacob quickly ran up and closed the door and locked it.
"Jacob, what is going on. What do you mean someone is outside?" Jacob was to busy inspecting every square inch of basement to answer Camillas questions. She walked up to her usually casual brother, who was now on the edge anxious brother, and stopped him from leaving the corner he was examining. "Jacob, what.is.going.on"
"Just be quite and sit here, I'll tell you later"
"Later? Why not now, I would rather know who or what I'm hiding from now so I can stack my odds on the outcome." Before Camilla was going to say something else but she heard the familiar creak of the wood floor upstairs. Jacob walked to Camilla who was now stricken with fear and he crouched next to her grabbing her by the arm but did look away from the door.
"Listen to me okay? There is a back door to your right, I want you to sneak out there and run till you can't anymore, but what ever you do, dont go somewhere where there is no one. I want you to go into town, or a friends house. Got it?" Camilla blinked and shook her head to snap herself out of the shock she was in. "What about yourself, what are you gonna do"? Jacob was about to answer when the door handle to the basement clicked and shaked, signaling that someone was indeed looking for something in their house.
"Jacob."
"Shh its okay I'll be fine okay? Now go and get help." As Camilla got up and glanced at the door to the upstairs she carefully walked towards her escape route. She looked behind her before opening the door, and looked at her brother who was now standing ready for action. "Go on, get out of he-"
Just as Jacob broke his focus the wooden door came down and was pushed down the stairs leaving broken wood chunks scattered everywhere. "I found you, you son of a bitch" The unknown figure ran down the stairs, on the attack. Jacob grabbed one peice of broken wood and snapped it again making it a sharp point. Camilla was paralyzed to her spot wide eyed and staring at her uninvited visitor who was clearly there for something or someone. "Camilla, get out. NOW"
With that shout Camilla snapped out of it and flung open the escape door and ran as fast as could, only to hear the strangers voice screaming at her to get back here.
