The darkness enveloped him as the blade dropped from his hand and clattered onto the bathroom floor, splattering blood drops on the cold tiles. He watched the blood drip onto the white surface and turn dark. Felt dizzy, a million miles from himself. Then the dark overcame him and spit him out into a white nightmare. A constant beeping. The click of heels on a floor. Murmurs and hoarse whispering. Then it was gone.

Alex sat down into her seat and gave a long sigh. The classroom was almost empty, people still lingering between classes. She gave a sideways glance at the seat next to her, still empty. Trying to put a gnawing anxiety aside, Alex opened her notebook and pulled a pen out of her pocket, watching the other kids slowly filter into the room, loud and obnoxious. Again, she quickly looked next to her and turned back to the notebook, flipping through the already heavy and covered pages to a new one in the back. Delicately, she clicked the pen and started drawing in long, wispy strokes, completely absorbed in the ink on the paper.

Suddenly, the door slammed, violently closing the door to her concentration. Alex dropped her pen onto the desk and met the teacher's eyes at the front of the room, first flicking her eyes to the seat next to her, again, still empty. For some reason, it bothered her. That desk belonged to the only friend in that class, and she felt vulnerable.

" Alright! Get out your laptops, we'll be taking notes. Olivia, get the lights."

He quickly went around his desk and turned the projector on, slowly warming up. A girl with blonde hair and ripped jeans got up and flipped the lights off. Alex pulled her laptop out of her bag and opened the lid, closing all recent tabs and getting onto her document she'd been using the past month for notes.

" We'll start in 2 minutes, please dim your screens and for God's sake, do not play any music during the presentation, you can have time to screw around after." She turned the screen down and returned her attention to the teacher's screen.

" Okay, take about 5-10 notes, I have about 15 slides, so pay attention, they'll help you for the test." He went through about 3 of them before the door was opened and a dark figure came in, head down, and slid into the empty seat. Alex turned her head and gave a long, hard stare into a pair of dangerous blue eyes before they shrugged and pulled out their own laptop, the screen lighting up his features. With black, flippy hair, eyeliner, and a black t shirt, he was considered a freak like her. He logged on and went to his notes, quickly catching up and falling into rhythm with the lesson as the stares slowly turned away.

" That's it, keep the volume down please, you get out in about 15 minutes."

Alex instantly turned to the side and grabbed Finn's hand and chin angrily. " What happened to you?" She demanded. He gave a scoff and pulled away indignantly.

" Nothing, just overslept." He pulled his sleeve down a tad and went onto his laptop's files.

Alex glared at Finn until he looked at her and lightly punched her shoulder. " I'm okay, Alex, I mean it. Go do something."

She knew he was bullshitting, but turned away and put her earbuds in, blaring " 1940" by The Submarines. Finn gave her a lopsided grin and sent her a GIF of a yawning snake. She instantly laughed and surfed the web, looking for a new hoodie for the rest of the class until the bell rang.

Alex grew up in Indiana, raised by her mother and father until their divorce when she was 6. Her mother ended up with custody of her and moved them to Nevada. Her dad was a drunk, her mother a psycho lunatic who wouldn't let go of Alex's father. She was an only child, and spent her time either reading or drawing as a kid until she was about 12. Alex hadn't heard from her father since the divorce, except for a birthday card in the mail with $100 every year. He paid child support, but often there was a new name next to his on the card. One year it was Patti, the next 2 it was Ruby. She hated her father; for drinking, for abusing her mother, for being a shitty ass dad. Her mother often sat in her room with the lights off and the T.V on for the first few years after they moved. Then she found a guy, cleaned herself up, and now her mom often stayed out late, but kept the fridge and pantry full, along with Alex's wallet. But no amount of money from either of her parents would ever pay for the damage they did to her.

Finn and Alex got their things and fled the class before anyone else. He turned to go down the hall, but Alex pulled him along to an empty room collecting dust and closed the door.

" What are you doing?" He asked.

Alex kicked a chair at him and sat down in one herself. He slowly sat, then crossed his arms defensively.

" Roll them up."

" No." He gave her a hard glare.

" Yes."

" Make me."

She darted forward and tackled him to the ground, using her small figure to her advantage, shoving his sleeves up. She slowly got up, tears burning in her eyes. There were numerous cuts all over his arm, on his wrist and forearm, making his whole arm red and sensitive. Finn shoved himself back and pulled his sleeves down. " I told you no, Alex!" He yelled angrily.

" What the fuck, Finn?!?" She leaned against the wall, heart pounding. Finn glared at her from the floor. " I thought you were getting better!"

He stood up and nearly snarled at her, " How would you know? You don't know shit!"

She felt a pang in her chest and her thighs started to ache at the memory of their recent breakup. He'd left her the day after Brent kissed her, screaming at her.

" Why?" She managed to choke out. " Why?"

Finn stared past her and blinked tears out of his eyes warily. " You're a fucking cheater and a slut and I hate your fucking guts. You drink, I cut. What's the fucking problem? Why do you even care?" He scared her now, his normally sky blue eyes a deep ocean blue. " You're the reason I have these, you fucking imbecile!"

Alex had to bite her lip to keep the tears from spilling down her cheeks, but he kept talking, words cutting through her head. " You'll never know how much it hurts to catch the love of your life kissing another man! How much it hurts to know that your girlfriend- excuse me- EX, cuts herself and drinks and won't get any help! She won't call someone and talk it out! So don't act so surprised! You're the reason why my arm's all fucked up!"

She frowned, a single tear trailing down her cheek. " What the fuck did I do?"

Finn tucked his hair back and looked at the floor. " You don't get it, do you? What haven't you done?"

Alex turned away and sniffed, shaking her head. " What I don't get is why you keep hurting yourself, even when you have a counselor. Even when I'm here for you."

There was nothing but the muffled sound of talking and closing lockers while she let the words sink in.

" Well, maybe you don't know me anymore."

" Finn, wait, please-" He cut her off with an icy glare.

" Leave me alone."

He left, walking down the hall. He stopped and slammed his hands into a locker angrily, earning a few stares and whispers. He leaned his head on the cold metal door for a second, then ran to his next class.

She sat on the floor for a few minutes, wiping the tears from her face furiously, then stood and slammed the door on her way out, slinking into the classroom before the door closed.
