The reason why people need to say "Friends forever" is because unlike family it's almost always guaranteed to end as 'friend' ends with 'end'.

And well, also because technically you can't change your family because it's the one you're born with or the one you've chosen. Not so much for the chosen one but the one you're born with is the one you're stuck with.
