Jeremy's heart pounded. He was certain he saw the doorknob turn. It was just after midnight, and he was half asleep when he heard knocking on the door. Or, at least, he thought he did. It almost sounded like stomping. To his relief, the door did not open. Good thing I locked the door, he thought. When he opened the door, he saw a large package to the side of his house, made of a strange, black material. It had a large hole in the side, big enough for him to crawl through. He had heard that his neighbor, Mary, had received a similar package. Within Mary's strange object was a huge chunk of brie cheese, her favorite food. After no one saw her for days, she was later discovered dead in the box, clutching the cheese.
"There is no way that I am touching that box," said Jeremy. It was probably left here by the giants."
And the giants were bad news, thought Jeremy. His friends and neighbors all agreed that the giants wanted to kill them. Several mysterious objects, which were made of wood and hard, thin metal bars, were left on the ground with bits of chocolate or cheese by these strange, immense creatures. When stepped on, a metal bar would swing forward, trapping, if not killing, its victim. They were referred to as wire death contraptions. Sometimes, the giants were even referred to as wire death contraption people, because they scattered the machines across the ground like leaves.
