"What are you sorry about? You didn't kill her."

"No, but you basically grew up without her...I can't imagine not having my mom-"

"I uh, don't really want to talk about it..." He cuts me off. "How about I just write the essay and you can help with translating and pronouncing it?" I nod but I still feel bad. I awkwardly watch him type for a few minutes before I decide to break the silence.

"Hey..." My nails tap the table and his blue eyes meet mine. "A couple of us are going to the carnival later? Do you want to come?"

"Bree Allen is inviting me to hang out with her squad?"

"Yes or no, Butterfly Boy?"I try to resist smiling.

"Alright...Baby Flash," I roll my eyes at that nickname. "What time should I meet you guys?"

"I hope Brett feels better..." Josh admits as we walk toward the front door of my house.

"I know...I feel bad that we're going without him..." I confess before I biting my bottom lip.

We offered to go on another day but Brett assured us that it was fine. He didn't want to be the reason for us not going to the carnival on Opening Day. I unlock the door and open it before Josh decides to speak up.

"Maybe, we should wait till he feels better?" He suggests with a shrug. I can't help but smile.

Guilt looks adorable on him!

"Hey guys." A familiar voice greets, causing me to open the door even more.

"Lise? What are you doing here?" I surprisingly ask.

"Brett told me he was sick so I came by to check up on him." She shares before my eyes advert to the plastic bag she was holding. She notices my gaze before she lifts it up. "Oh, I brought a few seasons of The Middle and some cold Green Tea." She points out. "Reader's Digest says it will boost his immune system." She informs with a nod.

"Aww, Brett's gonna love that." I smile and hold onto her shoulder.

"Thanks...Are you two heading to the carnival?"

"Actually, I think we're gonna reschedule?" Josh points out as he looks at me for assurance.

"What!? Why!?" Elisa looks at us back and forth.

"We feel bad for going without Brett." I clarify with a shrug.

"No. Go to the carnival. Brett would want you to go." She assures as she rubs my shoulder. "Besides...I've got him covered." I look back at Josh and we exchange looks.

"...Ok," I give in before I get a text message. Elisa claps happily and Josh smiles at her. I reach into my bag and pull out my phone. A sigh escapes my lips as soon as I read the text.

"What?" Josh asks.

"Dante cancelled. He says something came up."
