Chapter 1: A great perhaps

Cairo's POV

The sound of the alarm rings throughout my room. I groan in annoyance, grab my pillow and throw it at the alarm. It shuts off. Ah peace and quiet. I'm about to slip back into my peaceful state of slumber when my door swings open and reveals my mother.
Mom: Cairo! Wake up sweetie! You need to get ready for school!
I mumble "I don't want to" into my pillow.
Mom: What was that?
Me: I said I'm coming.
Mom: Hurry up Cai. Your breakfast will get cold.

With that said she leaves my room. I groan once more before I quite literally roll out of bed and onto the floor. Mmh when did my floor get so comfy? I am about doze off again when my mom burst through the door again.
Mom: CAIRO!
Me: Shhh I'm praying. In the name of the father, the son and the Holy Spirit. Amen!
Mom: Mmhmm just get ready please.

This time she doesn't leave until she sees me getting up on my feet and heading for the bathroom to do my daily routine. I walk back to my room and get dressed in the outfit below.

I have a different...no... interesting sense of style. I swear that the only interesting about my life. I decided to leave my hair in its beautiful afro. I rush downstairs to have my breakfast and to leave before my dad sees my outfit. My parents support me in anything I do. Even if it's my outfit choices. They see it as a medium of self-expression. The reason I'd rather avoid my dad is because I do not want to start my day with a Q and A about "what does the pink jacket mean". My whole family beat me to the breakfast table.

My family consists of my parents and my older brother Chad. If you haven't noticed it yet, my parents named us after places in Africa. Cairo is a city in Egypt and Chad is a country in Africa. Anyway Chad is a year older than me, but I'm smarter so we're both seniors. He's basically a jock I guess. My mom works at the local hospital as a GP (doctor) and my dad works as a professor at the local college. We aren't swimming in cash rich but we're financially stable.
I sit at the table and start eating my breakfast.
Chad: So today your a marshmallow Pokémon?
I glare at him.
Me: Ha ha ha. You are sooo funny.
Chad: Hey no glaring. Marshmallows are supposed to be sweet.
Dad: Chad, leave your sister be. It's her way of expressing herself. So honey why don't you explain your outfit for me? What does the-
Me: You know what dad-
I get up for my seat and start getting my stuff for school.
Me: I would really love to but I promised Abby that I would give her a ride to school and I can't afford to be late for school.
I walk up to him and to mom and give them both kisses on the cheek before I leave for Abby's house.

Abby Brickhill has been my friend since we were in the 5th grade after she asked me why I had crayons in my hair.
Me: Because it's the most interesting thing that's gonna happen today.
Boy was I right. When I pull up in front of Abby's house in my 2008 Jeep Wrangler, she's already waiting for me.
Abby: You're early?
Me: Hey new year new me.
Abby: It was your dad again wasn't it?
Me: Fine it was. Now get in or your gonna mess up my "new me" vibes and we're going to be late.
She shakes her head laughing before getting in the car. I start the car and drive.
Abby: So are you ready for the new year?
Me: I'm ready for it to end.
She giggles
Abby: Oh cause it's your "great escape" right crayon?
Me: There's nothing for me here Ab.
Abby: You're not looking hard enough.
Me: "I seek a great perhaps".
Abby: Stop reading all those books and you might just find one, John Green.
I laugh as we pull into the school parking lot.
