1: Lilies and Rose Buds

This isn’t where I saw my life going two weeks before graduation. I sat on the couch watching my step father, Jason play Spades with his boys and I question if he knows that I hear him at night. I hear him crying and punching the walls in the basement until it is time for him to go to work.

Jason's freshly wrapped knuckles bled through one of the bandages as he throws down a queen of hearts on the table, but Dad ignores it. Since her funeral, he has been ignoring all the secrets that she hid from us.

He is ignoring the fact that half of our lives with Mom was all a lie. That he isn't my dad biologicaly and my mother isn't the woman we thought she was.

It’s only been a month since we buried her and at least three lawyers have been to our house with something new from my mom’s life before she married Dad and another life she was living before she died.

A life that proved that I’m not Jason Racine’s daughter. A life that proved that my name isn’t Isadora Monett-Racine. No, it’s Isadora Angela Lovette. The daughter of some Italian guy six states away. Some Italian guy who Mom was "running" from as one of the lawyers puts it.

That italian guy who didn’t know I existed until the day of Mom’s funeral. It was like looking into a funhouse mirror. All my life I was told that I was my mother’s identical twin, but after looking at the man in the fresh, grey Armani suit and white alligator shoes. I, now, know that they were just being nice. Isaac Lovette took one look at me and cursed God’s name.

The very first thing he asks me, his long lost daughter was, “Where the fuck did you come from?”

It was only the two of us in Mom’s greenhouse. I guess, you can say that I knew who he was when he walk through the door and I’d been avoiding him. You can’t avoid the truth, like Mom use to say. She was right like she always had been.

Isaac followed me into Mom’s garden while all the other guest were in the house reminiscing on the great times that they had with her while she was alive.

I was just sitting in front of the last patch of lilies she planted. They are growing, so beautiful and bright. I want to take the garden scissors and just cut them out. She lied to me and the man walking straight into the greenhouse was complete proof of that.

Isaac took off the expensive jacket and sat down next to me undoing his tie. A single thought ran through my head to just gut him because Mom probably had a good explanation to why she kept me from him.

“I take it that you know who I am,” Isaac frowns looking down at his shoes. “From what I hear, nobody else does. So, tell me what I am suppose to do here.”

“It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that you are my biological father. We are practically identical if it wasn’t for me being a female. Everyone is wrapped in their own world because of Mom’s death, so their emotions are on the table and their minds aren’t really focus,” I sighed.

I open and closed the scissors frowning at the way the rust stops it from closing completely. If I just stabbed him in the right artery, how long would it take him to bled out?

“Before today did you know about me?” Isaac asked removing the scissors from my hands sitting them on the side of him with one hand.

With the other, he grabbed my wrist sitting my palm face up. I didn’t watch him pull down my bracelets or wince when one of the strings pulled skin from the bleeding scab. “When did you start doing this?”
