I rushed into the class right as the bell rang, and quickly sat in my seat next to Cambriee. She turned excitedly towards me, with a smile even brighter than the sun. I attempted to smile back, even though I was miserable.

"Can you believe it's only 2 weeks until homecoming? I mean, our first homecoming," she said with so much enthusiasm, I thought it was impossible. "I've gotten asked by at least 5 guys now, but I don't even think I'm going to go." Cambriee finished.

I hit my head against the desk and covered it with my arms. Loudly, I muttered, "That's what happens when you're pretty and more popular than your best friend." I turned my head so that I could barely see her out of the corner of my eye.

Cambriee's expression seemed to soften. "Oh Kylee, I didn't mean to make you feel bad. I know you haven't been asked yet, but I'm sure you will," she said, and bit her lip.

I lifted my head from the desk and rolled my eyes. "C, have you seen what I've looked like? It looks like a 5 year old tried to dress and style me today." I laughed softly, trying to lighten the mood. After all, I wasn't irritated with Cambriee. I was tired from staying up late, trying to figure out ways to protect my responsibilities. I leaned back in my chair. "I honestly don't think I'll go either."

She looked down and frowned. I knew I had made her upset, and I felt bad. Trying to change the subject, I grabbed my binder from my bag. "Here, we have to practice our speeches anyway. I haven't even tried to memorize it," I said, opening the large blue book. Inside, was the small paragraph of the day.

Cambriee moved her chair towards me, and practiced the words alongside me. We were so concentrated we didn't know that I was being called until a pencil was thrown at us. We both turned around to find Jay and Kayden.

Jay had a smug, yet excited look on his face. Kayden was more shy, and cowered down in his chair. I looked mostly at Jay, since it was so obviously him that had thrown the pencil. "What in Sam's Hell do you want?" I asked, exasperated that my concentration was broken.

His smile grew even wider when he said, "Well, you see, my buddy Kayden here was wondering if you would go to the dance with him." He raised his eyebrows at me.

I looked around, and then, very stupidly, pointed at myself. "Me? As in, this person?" I asked, or more like squeaked.

Kayden stood up a little straighter. Jay just nodded, his face suddenly going very serious. "Yes you. Who else?"

I finally snapped out of the mini daze I was in and looked straight at Kayden. "Are you being legit about this?" I asked, probably a bit more rudely than I intended.

Jay interrupted before Kayden could have a chance to say anything. "Yes he's very serious. I mean-"

"Jay! I was talking to Kayden, not you. So stop talking," I snapped. I focused my attention to Kayden again. "So, are you?"

With my attention turned to him, he shrunk back again. "I am serious about this. I really want to go with you," he said nervously.

I relaxed and smiled a little. "Well, okay then. My answer is yes."

"Hell yeah! You gotta exchange numbers now," Jay said excitedly. I frowned. I didn't have a phone....

A paper was passed to me, and I folded it. I smiled at Kayden. "Thanks. I'll text you."

He smiled at me, and I turned around. Cambriee looked at me with extreme excitement.

"OMG you did get asked to homecoming!! I'm so happy for you," she said.

All I could do was smile slightly. Because when I looked into Kayden's eye's, I saw him. and he was in danger. I only got those visions when I was supposed to protect someone. And I guess I was supposed to protect him. I inwardly screamed.

What have I gotten myself into?
